NAS i-Stor iS607. Finish with a file

    Having bought a brief review of the i-Stor iS607 and its pretty little face, I bought it last week. Feelings are twofold. On the one hand, it works, but at what cost, gentlemen. It seems I can now go to admin the Linux server.

    * NAS, or Network Attached Storage, is such a box with a screw that connects to the network and quietly performs the functions of a file server and a torrent download in a corner. Better than special servers in the following parameters: of course, price, size, power consumption.

    Short.

    Is it worth buying?
    Not unless you are a Linux guru and / or like to bang your head on a wall.

    Minuses.
    • The standard firmware iS607 can only ... but it can do nothing
    • Non-standard firmware must still be found and managed to install the correct
    • There is no technical support for the iS607 as a class, 95% of the information on the Internet is outdated and does not work stupidly
    • You need to know Linux in order to somehow bring it into working condition
    • Judging by the forums, the iS607 is not friendly with half the screws
    • Also, with half the routers
    • Pretty weak
    • Has a bunch of (sometimes strange and incomprehensible) glitches

    Pros.
    • Pretty girl
    • Works

    * Insolently tyryu picture from the same topic

    In this post I want to collect my experience setting up i-Stor iS607. Because there is very little information on the Internet and I had to re-read everything in order to achieve something. To facilitate the way for the brothers Habravchanam (although I have no doubt that most of you would have successfully completed this quest yourself and probably faster than me), I publish the instructions in one place.

    Long

    I have a weak macbook, which I constantly carry with me, and a screw on it of 200 (fake) gigabytes. Therefore, I wanted a file storage / torrent download. To stand in a corner and file storage and torrent download. Moreover, there is a screw per terabyte.

    As an ardent Apple fan, I went and bought the Time Capsule i-Stor iS607 because it looks like a Mac Pro. A sort of Mac Pro Mini. By the way, a great idea, the existing Mac Mini does not impress me at all. I really hoped that I would plug it into the network and everything at once would magically be good, logical, and most importantly work.

    Well, I do not.

    I was lucky 3 times. The first time I slipped at the entrance and almost broke the 607th and nearby screw. The second time - they supported my screw (hurray!), And as I found out from the huge 39-page branch of the forum , this happens only 3 times during the winter solstice in even years. Crying about this 37 pages out of 39. And finally, I was lucky with the old Dlink DIR-300 WiFi point, at least someone said that the device does not hold it. On the same forum, a couple of pages crying about expensive routers to which the iS607 disdains to connect at all or runs at a speed of 3600 Baud.

    So, setup.

    From the very beginning, I was greeted by a dull, braked Web face, in which the default option is Chinese, although the interface is in (Chinese) English. On the internetThey write that telnet is available there. I probably came across a special new version in which they decided to remove it. THERE IS NO TELNET. And it does not react to any magic files in the / applications / new_software folders in different variations of the register and position of words.

    The built-in torrent iS607 is also miserable a little more than completely. Download them completely impossible and nothing.

    Here a good man put together the setup instructions. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE FIRMWARE FROM HERE. For me it stupidly didn’t react at all to anything except the web muzzle, which did not load the menu. Neither telnet, nor ftp, nor samba. And in the same 39-page topic of 15 pages, people are discussing how to reboot a dead device by resuming it using an old wire from a Siemens phone. Raise your hand, who has on hand a wire from a Siemens phone and a soldering iron.

    And the topic starts so well from the first post:
    RS232 wiring on the i-Stor iS607 board.
    The j2 connector (10-pin) is under a transparent sticker in the upper left under the drive.

    I already began to think to go look for a hammer and try to fix this business in the old Russian way, but in the depths of the same epic topic on the forum I found a person who faced the same problem. He, therefore, wrote a prayer for help about this, and three days later he came and shared his decision.

    Gentlemen, IT WAS TO CLEAR COOKIES! That is, a person did not sleep for 3 days, did not eat, but tried all possible and impossible tricks to do something about it. I would not be surprised if he swam around him with a tambourine and read him bedtime stories. Then his 13-year-old brother came, climbed the sites 18+, cleared cookies and all of a sudden EARNED!

    I do not have a 13-year-old brother. What would I do I do not know.

    In general, the face has earned. And nothing more. Thank Bosch, I found this firmware .

    (1) WE PLACE A FIRMWARE FROM HERE

    Download the file and make an update via the iS607 web-face. It has SSH. Login: root, password: *********** (that is, what you installed in the webmord to admin user). NFS does not work for me with a poppy on any firmware no matter what I do. I don’t know whose jamb.

    (2) WE INSTALL OPTWARE

    From the same FAQ, download the file with optware. No / Public / Software / New_Software does not work with this firmware and telnet is not there. Copy the contents of the archive (another archive and init script) to the public / applications / optware folder and run the script. It will copy optware to the folder below public.

    (3) UPDATE OPTWARE

    ipkg update
    ipkg upgrade

    The script should register a link to the optware folder and add it in PATH.DO NOT RESTART IN ANY CASE . Dumb bullshit resets all settings, if you have this, scroll down.

    What I did not understand, it seems that the system is based on some kind of flash drive with a size of 16 megabytes. So, you won’t be able to break up particularly in software. A friend advised me to install nano, but it was already bent at the stage of downloading the distribution.

    (4) PUT TRANSMISSION

    ipkg install transmission

    I did this. Transmission last I really liked. He has a super web face at the address http: // ***: 9091 / transmission / web /. He needs to register a config. In the public folder, I made the config folder and shoved settings.json with such contents there.

    I tried to make authorization, but in any configuration he did not care and I scored.

    (5) WE MAKE ANY JUN FOR TIME MACHINE

    Since Time Machine stubbornly did not want to backup to the iS607 Sambov disk, I had to install AFP support. With him, by the way, the external story does not fall off or falls off very rarely. I have to reconnect samba periodically. And judging by the forum, not just me.

    So, again we look at this topic . I quote removing excess. DO NOT RESET !!! Come on - this is SSH, but you can edit from samba.

    6.1. download file afpd.tgz
    * Put the contents in / public / applications / afpd /
    6.6. We go along the path / public / applications / afpd /
    6.7. Go to the conf
    6.8 directory . We edit the afpd.conf file - we go to the last line and look through,
    the paths to different files are written there , they may be incorrectly specified
    mount point of the disk - ide1 - forward it to my own, save the 6.8.1 file,
    I experimented, and I personally changed one more thing:
    a) noddp - nevertheless decided that this is the most correct option
    b) -guestname guest - removed it altogether, because by default, it should set nobody
    c) added the setpassword parameter so that users can change their
    6.9 passwords themselves . We edit the file AppleVolumes.default - the format is simple: first go the directories on the drive,
    then after allow: a list of logins separated by a comma to whom you can. save
    6.10. We return to the previous directory / afpd
    6.11.
    We execute the commands: 6.11.1 rm ./conf/afppasswd
    6.11.2 ./bin/afppasswd -c -p ./conf/afppasswd
    6.11.3 Now we set the passwords for the accounts, regardless of the standard setting
    ./bin/afppasswd -a -p ./conf/afppasswd account_name
    and enter the password twice.
    (here's an ambush, for some reason I didn’t allow complex passwords to be entered,
    only simple ones like 123456 or qwerty, but qwerty1234 doesn’t) the
    password problem was solved only by allowing the user to change their password,
    and such a change allows generating any passwords (restriction on set the minimum length in afpd.conf)
    * Run init

    I also did not manage to set complex passwords. Akak didn’t dare to change them myself. Tell me who knows.

    Next, put avahi as it is written again there.

    7.1. download file avahi.tgz
    * Copy to the folder / public / applications / avahi /
    7.6. We go along the path / public / applications / avahi / conf
    7.7. We edit the file /public/applications/avahi/conf/Avahi-deamon.conf
    7.7.1 I edited the parameter: host name - specified the name that should be displayed in the network environment
    7.7.2 deleted the line domain-name = local - it is by default this will substitute
    7.7.3 changed rlimit-nofile = 30 to rlimit-nofile = 20 since in the description they write:
    “avahi-daemon shouldn't need more than 15 to 20 open file descriptors concurrently.”
    7.7.4 changed rlimit-nproc = 3 to rlimit-nproc = 5 so that there was a margin))))
    7.8. Remove unnecessary registration in DNS
    7.8.1, enter the service
    7.8.2 directory, transfer all * .service files (except of course afpd.service)
    from the current directory to the disabled directory
    (you can of course just delete it, but suddenly then we want to raise something else)
    * Run init

    After that, I got an AFP connection right away. Now you need to create a special image so that Time Machine can figure out how to back up our belongings. It is done like this. You need to allow her to backup to network drives with the

    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences command TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

    They say you need to reboot. I put it a year ago, when I backed up to a Windows disk, so I don’t know. We reboot the MAC, not the device, and do the following. First, find out your poppy ethernet address.

    ifconfig | grep ether

    sudo hdiutil create -size $ gigg -type SPARSEBUNDLE -nospotlight -volname "Backup of My Mac" -fs "Case-sensitive Journaled HFS +" -verbose ./ $ Computername_MACaddress

    In this $ GIG command, replace with the maximum size in gigabytes, $ Computername with the name of your computer on the network and MACaddress to a recognized poppy address without a colon. It will turn out something like mycomputer_001234567890.

    This will create a 150 meter file that needs to be copied to the device. On the drive where you want to backup. After, show Time Machine to him, and it worked for me.

    (6) BACKUP FROM HOSTING

    On the poppy I use rsync and backup files from the hosting from time to time. Delivered rsync through optware and made a script for myself to backup.

    #! / bin / sh
    su valyard
    rsync -zre ssh *** @ ***. ru: / home / *** / domains / mnt / ide2 / public / webbackup /

    To see through AFP, you need to backup under the one you are logging in with and not under the root.

    (7) SCARY SCAM

    I do not know what to do and why, but with every reboot, the i-Stor iS607 overwrites at least everything that was in my / root folder and completely forgets about all the settings. At the same time, it does not perform anything from the startup I know. Thank god it's not in the / mnt / ide2 folder. Therefore, you have to write everything and restart it again. I wrote myself a script that I run manually.

    #! / bin / sh
    ln -sf / mnt / ide2 / optware / / opt
    PATH = "$ PATH: / opt / bin: / opt / sbin"
    / mnt / ide2 / public / applications / afpd / init
    / mnt / ide2 / public / applications / avahi / init
    transmission-daemon -g / mnt / ide2 / public / config

    Conclusions.

    What can I say, it would be better if I assembled miniATX with Windows. I seem to know how to push buttons. From the story it seems that I quickly got information and put everything in place. Nifiga. Anything useful on the i-Stor iS607 is very difficult to find. I hope this post is indexed by search engines and desperate people will get here, because official technical support can be said to be absent.

    In general, I do not recommend taking the iS607. This is some unsupported clone, it’s not clear what. I was advised by WD MyBook World Edition, for which there is a whole community and you can ask anyone. But he is not such a simp and does not hold two disks. Moreover, I already had a screw.

    But, nevertheless, I must say that the device is working. After completion by a file. And performs its functions. If you do not pay attention to the inhibition and falling off of samba. Copy speed is normal. By wiring, I get up to 9 megabytes per second. I think you can live. For the sake of the web muzzle transmission is definitely worth leaving.

    I’ll get myself an external IP and will download torrents from work.

    PS

    If someone knows the best solutions and / or has any advice to give, do not hesitate to write. I cautiously look at Linux and he reciprocates, so I won’t pretend to be a powerful guru.
