Install Ovi Maps 3.0 on Nokia N95
After reading a post about Nokia’s free navigation, I decided to upgrade Nokia Maps on my phone to the new version.
I don’t really need a navigator (I like to lay the route myself :)), but I use the phone actively as a map. Therefore, the main reason for the update in my case is the hope that in the new version some annoying bugs in the cards have been fixed. The hope came true :) The
following describes the process of updating the provision and loading of cards, which, although simple, is not quite obvious due to minor flaws in the interface of the Nokia website.
A short note: I live in St. Petersburg and use the map on my phone for trips around the city and Europe. For other purposes, I use Google Maps, Bing Maps or paper maps, as it’s just nice to deal with them :)
So, the initial data:
1. Nokia N95 phone with the installed Nokia Maps 2.0;
2. A computer with installed Nokia PC Suite;
3. USB cable;
4. Internet access.
Procedure:
1. Go to maps.nokia.com/explore-services/ovi-maps/downloads#/default and select a phone model. Nokia N95 is not in the list, so click on the link “To find Ovi Maps for other mobile divices ...” located just below. We are redirected to a page with a wider selection of devices: europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/maps-support/compatibility-and-download#/default
2. Select a model. A Download button appears on the screen to download the Maps Updater program, which is designed to update the cartographic support of the phone. Please note that a step-by-step instruction is presented on the left side of the page — it should be followed :) :)
After downloading and installing Maps Updater, we connect the phone to the computer in PC Suite mode. The mode is selected on the phone itself at the time of connection. Running Nokia PC Suite on a computer is not necessary;
4. Launch Maps Updater and allow it to update the map support. At the same time, the phone itself will also need to confirm the installation of new programs.
After downloading to the phone and installing the software, the card will be ready to work, BUT! old cards will be deleted from the phone (saved user points will remain). Therefore, you must reload the cards.
To do this, it is convenient to use the program Nokia Map Loader, which can be downloaded from the same page as Maps Updater (the download button is located at the bottom of the page).
Procedure:
1. Download and install Map Loader;
2. Connect the phone to the computer (for example, in PC Suite mode);
3. Launch Map Loader. After discovering the phone, you will be offered a list of maps available for download. Select a card by silk on the "+" sign located in the corresponding line. Selected cards are displayed on the right side of the program window;
4. To clear the phone’s memory card from old cards, click the Delete maps from storage button, which is located in the lower right corner of the window;
5. Click the Doanload button to load new maps.
After the download process is completed (the maps are large, they do not load quickly), you can close the program, disconnect the phone from the computer and try the card :)
A few positive points that have already pleased in the new maps (I just installed Ovi Maps 3.0, I haven’t tried to use navigation yet):
1 Significantly increased the detail of the maps of St. Petersburg - displayed separate houses and courtyard drives. The names of parks and other large objects are written (this, of course, depends on the detail of the map for a particular area);
2. The detail of the map changes more qualitatively when the scale changes, the names of streets and settlements are written more accurately than before;
3. The interface has been slightly changed: elements are drawn more accurately and take up less space, prompts are displayed with the assignment of screen interface elements and keys. The map displays a miniature compass;
4. The base of facilities (restaurants, hotels and so on) has been expanded. At least I think so;
5. A map bug has been fixed due to which many instead of roads saw a large empty square in the southern part of Finland (those who drive there will understand me :));
6. Fixed map bugs in other regions, manifested in the disappearance / appearance of roads when zooming.
7. Navigation really turns on and does not ask for money! (I repeat, I have not tested the work in business yet :))
In general, despite my conservatism in such things, I am pleased with the update of maps from Nokia Maps 2.0 to Ovi Maps 3.0 :)
