Country and language statistics
Recently, Wikipedia has published internal statistics about which language versions of Wikipedia in which countries are popular. In particular, the pages are interesting:
Of course, you need to take into account the error in determining the country by ip-address, especially for countries whose share in traffic is less than 0.001%, but nevertheless, interesting statistics can be found in the statistics.
I was also interested to see in which countries the positions of national language sections are strong, and in which not so. I compiled a separate tablet about the popularity of the English language section of Wikipedia among Internet users of different countries. Data is given as a percentage of the total number of hits on different language versions of Wikipedia. Apparently, we can talk about how well Internet users from a particular country speak English (prefer information in it) or how well developed are Wikipedia sections in national languages (the better the “local” language section is developed, the less reason to go to English) .
I selected only those countries for which the share in the total Wikipedia traffic is more than 0.05%. Large countries (traffic over 1%) are highlighted.
Well, in the appendage, a list of countries among which the Russian language is popular among Wikipedia users (in percentage with respect to all requests)
- What language sections of Wikipedia are visited by users from a specific country
- Which countries are watching a particular language section
Of course, you need to take into account the error in determining the country by ip-address, especially for countries whose share in traffic is less than 0.001%, but nevertheless, interesting statistics can be found in the statistics.
- From Russia, 1.6% of all requests come to Wikipedia servers.
- The Russian section attracts 2.1% of all requests.
- 70% of requests from Ukraine go to the Russian-language section (the next most popular is English 13% and only then Ukrainian).
- In Norway, the English section is more popular than the Norwegian.
- From Sierra Leone, the Russian section of Wikipedia is accessed more often than the English (embassy staff? Statistical error?).
- The Spanish section has the most queries from Mexico, not from Spain.
