Play Video Content on MacOS - Movist
After migration to Mac, one of the issues that caused some difficulties was the choice of a player for playing video content, including HD. If on Windows the choice is large enough (although in most cases I used GOM Player or Media Player Classic + K-Lite Codec Pack). On a Mac, it was limited to these programs: You probably shouldn’t dwell on them in detail, you already know them all. I will write only small comments that I did not like for one reason or another.
- QuickTime + Perian - stupid on some files, problems with sound, lack of any settings as a class, lack of intelligible control.
- Plex - with all its advantages, it is very difficult to call this 200 megabyte monster a player. With such functionality (ala Windows Media Center) its place is more likely as a part of HTPC.
- VLC (multi-platform, uses ffmpeg ) is a former favorite, though there were problems on some mkv and avi files (the problem is probably in ffmpeg than in vlc), starting from version 1.0 weird crashes, an overloaded settings panel and the interface are completely not mac way :)
My favorit
Quite by chance, on a blog I came across a Movist player, I immediately liked the player: small size, fast, native interface is very similar to QT, it loses everything that is possible, despite the latest build 0.6.7 it is very stable.

In full-screen mode, it is very similar to Mack's FrontRow, using content from iTunes and the Movies folder.

There are not so many settings in comparison with VLC, but they are all clear and there are plenty of them. Excellent subtitle support, Russian interface, support for Apple Remote. In general, all that the best representatives of this genre have and Movist.

Looking at the osx.iusethis.com website, there are not many users of the player compared to VLC (at the time of publication, 342 against18612 ) but I think the player will pick up his users very quickly, he is very good :)
Finally, the news about the fate of VLC for Mac.
The VideoLAN team, which is developing the popular open-source VLC cross-platform media player, said that the development of the Mac version of the product may be suspended in the near future. The reason is simple: the lack of volunteer developers with the right level of qualifications and knowledge of the target platform.
The most problematic development area for the Mac version of VLC is the user interface. According to the developers, the cross-platform core of the product written in C, as well as most of the plug-ins, work quite well, which cannot be said about the graphical interface for Mac OS X, which, when written in Objective-C, takes up only 1% of all VLC code . This is precisely what the developers explain a number of problems with the VLC 1.0.x versions for Mac OS X, as well as the discontinuation of support for 64-bit mode in version 1.0.3.
At the same time, developers acknowledge that VLC has always been insufficiently integrated with Mac OS X, which forced them to start work on an alternative shell for the VLC core, which was called Lunettes.
Nevertheless, this product is at an early stage of development and the first preliminary version will appear only in January. Quite unexpectedly, the VLC team complained of an unfriendly attitude towards their products from Apple, which supposedly in every way blocks their development.
