Debian Announces Official DebSrc3.0 Support
Debian developers have issued an official notice of support for the new source package format, DebSrc3.0.
A distinctive feature of the new format is the ability to separately store distribution patches to the source code (in the old src-package format, all patches were collected in a single diff.gz). The possibility of separate delivery of patches simplifies the process of documenting, makes the process of synchronizing patches with other distributions more convenient, and also allows authors of initial projects to accelerate the detection of new patches and their injection into the base project. In addition, third-party distributions based on the Debian package base can separately allocate their own patches, without modifying the original set of patches.
The new format adds other features, in particular, the use of several archives with source code, the inclusion of arbitrary binary files in the package (for example, the Debian PNG logo can now be added to the src package without using uuencode), as well as support for the bzip2 and lzma archives ( besides gzip currently in use).
This format was developed by members of the Debian project. Previously, the Ubuntu project has already adopted this format as the main one, without waiting for its official recognition by Debian.
