Launch Chromium OS in Virtual Box
A couple of days ago, Google showed us that Chromium OS is nothing more than (Ubuntu-) Linux with its window manager that runs only a browser. I personally thought this idea was innovative, although critics will start shouting that this is supposedly a simple “thin” client, paranoia patients will talk about 1984 and they will all be partly right. I think that for many near-minded users, for whom the computer itself is something mysterious and super-complex, and the word “browser” is nothing more than a synonym for the word “Internet”, such a system will greatly simplify life. But we will not go into philosophical questions. I didn’t really want to wait almost a year for Chromium OS to be completely processed, because at this stage the product is still very damp. I wanted to try the system live - the source code is completely accessible . Fortunately onarticle slipped techcrunch'e how to install Chromium OS in Virtual Box'e , also on a habr there are links to virtual images . Nevertheless, I conducted a small experiment, which I want to share with you.
Virtual Box
Download the image from Chrome OS from here (torrent) and unpack it.
We launch VirtualBox, New, set the name “Chrome OS”, the type of the Linux operating system, the Ubuntu version. We set the
size of the operating memory, in the screenshot 512MB, which later turned out to be small. Better give 1024. We
import the downloaded and unpacked image: Use existing disk, go to the daddy, Add, select chrome-image.
Done
we go in with our gmail account
you can already use the standard applications
Dox
The calculator started, but apparently something didn’t work.
Flash works without
picas problems, it shows pictures on the
calendar,
slides for presentations
and everyone’s favorite hubr. Nothing special, ordinary Chrome :)
almost everything interesting is controlled by magic keys / combinations. F12 shows all open windows
F8 shows all possible combinations
One of the questions that arises when looking at Chrome: how will the euro-commission react to the pre-installed Chrome browser? Is it possible to put alternatives?
about: memory shows only UI Processes
Ctrl + Alt + T launches a terminal that opens in full screen mode.
You can see that in Chrome OS it lives under a browser. And many beloved (and me too) Debian / Ubuntu live there: as it turned out, Google is cooperating with Canonical, and several Ubunta developers are also involved in Chrome.
That's all. I had a virtual machine “frozen” several times in a row, but anyway, I liked the idea at this stage already. Interestingly, this will ultimately come out of this. After all, even the merger of Android and Chrome seems to be quite a reality.
Have a nice experiment!
