Citrix Virtualizations Conference 09

    On September 3, 2009 in Kiev, Ukraine, the annual Citrix Virtualizations Conference was held, to which I was fortunate to become a participant. At the very beginning, there was a presentation of the blade solutions partner of HP's Citrix. The program also included the following questions:

    1. Virtualization of servers based on Citrix XenServer;
    2. Citrix XenServer Essentials virtual infrastructure management system;
    3. Virtualization and application delivery using XenApp 5 FP2;
    4. Informatization solution for small offices based on Citrix Branch Repeater;
    5. Delivery of virtual desktops (VDI) using Citrix XenDesktop 3 technology;
    6. Hypervisor Presentation for Citrix XenClient Desktops

    If, from points 2 to 5, everything, in principle, is understandable, but if it is not clear, you can read on the official website of the Citrix company , as well as the Citrix community website, then paragraphs 1 and 6 were especially interesting to me. And I want to share with you what exactly. As everyone probably noticed, nowadays, managing the virtual infrastructure via the web interface is becoming quite popular. Citrix XenServer is currently deprived of this functionality. The server pool and individual servers are managed using the Citrix XenCenter application installed on Windows. In the next version, according to Citrix employees, this functionality should be implemented. That is, now the administrator, so to speak, can be untied from the OS version to manage his virtual servers, only a browser will be needed. Also, according to the same employees, in the next version of Citrix XenServer, support, my dearly beloved, FreeBSD OS should be added as a guest system. It means, that somewhere in half a year there will be an opportunity to make a live migration of the FreeBSD OS installed as a virtual server. Next, on item 6. At the conference, Citrix introduced, so to speak, a prototype client hypervisor. What this thing is ... Actually, the Bare-Metal Xen hypervisor or level 1 hypervisor (installed on bare metal), with the ability to quickly switch between virtual machines using hot keys. Accordingly, the question arises of the speed and quality of work of this solution ... What this thing is ... But as you can see on the video, Windows works with all the effects and functionality. The public beta version of Citrix XenClient is expected in late October - early November 2009, and the product release in late March - early April 2010. This technology is likely to become the basis for Citrix XenDesktop's server-side virtual desktop delivery (VDI) technology in the future.
