Apple is building a giant data center - for what?

Apple is building a new data center in North Carolina. Nobody knows why Apple has such power, according to the editor of Data Center Knowledge, Rich Miller, it will be one of the largest data centers in the world:

Apple plans to allocate approximately 47,000 square meters for a data center in one single building. This would allow Apple to take a leading position in the ranking of the largest data centers in the world.

Let’s take a look at things in perspective: today the Apple information center in Newark is a little more than 11,500 square meters, while most data centers around the world do not jump over the 23,000 square meter bar. The new data center will be located next to Google Corporation in North Carolina, and will be a whopping 47,000 square meters. This is a lot of computing nodes, and massive storage space.

The big question here is: Why? Does itunes and the appstore really require such large resources? maybe this is a new product that will require this gigantic computing power and storage space? It cannot be just that.

It is believed that Apple is building a massive neural network to keep a duplicate of Steve Job's brain, which will be able to run the company forever. Just do not say it to Jim Goldman =)
