To donate or not to donate local video content to Youtube?
Due to the low cost of production and broadcasting, even small Internet media now have their own video content. And even three or four years ago, this was a rather serious problem.
First, you had to make your own flash player, and secondly, somehow distribute the content. Despite the presence of free players, all of them required improvement - where the interface is inconvenient, where in English, where the functionality is not enough. And giving content on your own from your server was very risky.
In this light, affiliate programs of Youtube, Rutube, etc. became very attractive for small media. They solved the problem with the player, and with the shipment of content. In addition, the potential audience of these services attracted. However, I didn’t come across any local media that would successfully take this opportunity. (Correct me in the comments, if that). What is the problem?
In my opinion, there were several deterrent factors. For the conservative regional (namely, the majority of small media are located in the regions) public, external players with their chips in the form of built-in advertising, means of copying code for embedding, etc. too complicated. For a content producer, someone else’s built-in advertising (in addition leading the reader to the video host’s website) instead of flexibly customizable one is an absolute minus. Uploading content to a hosting manually is a gloom.
And although Youtube went forward, allowed to register as a publisher and thereby eliminated pre-moderation, allowed to create channels and set their own design for them, provided means of content protection, even offered to earn on it, its actions did not have visible success. Only large TV channels came to him. And even that with very strange content.
Nevertheless, Youtube does not abandon attempts to attract new suppliers. On June 28, he again urged the producers of news video content to cooperate, this time enticing the integration of video with Google News, a proven source of traffic (though not for Russian media yet). According to PaidContent , about 200 were found willing to partner. And the other day, he has already openly invaded the sphere of interests of local media by launching the News Near You function. The New York Times called it a double-edged sword, since Youtube, in its opinion, can both give the content greater visibility and select the audience of its own local media sites.
It would seem that it was not for nothing that small media did not trust Youtube, but in my opinion, such a problem does not exist. Firstly, content can be duplicated. Secondly, it is a potential additional source of income. Thirdly, by correctly delivering and publishing content, you can get new visitors to your site. Fourth, you can correctly sew your ad directly into the content. Fifthly, the most important, the current product "News is next to you" is not able to compete with you.
There is nothing outstanding in this function. All she does is give you on the news pagevideo produced within 100 miles of your ip address. The maximum time sampling is 7 days. When I visited a page from Russia, I did not see any local content. Not even a word in Russian. Then I replaced Worldwide with Russia in the settings of the site. This partly helped. The vast majority of the proposed content was produced by NTV. And although the rest of the content belonged to the News & Politics category, as a whole it was not news, but outdated videos and reports of once events. That is, the content of local media is either still missing or is clearly not enough to cover all of the stomile spots. I don’t know how in the United States, but what was proposed to me completely did not correspond to the declared algorithm. It's not scary to compete with such a product.
What again hinders the local media? At least the lack of automation for downloading content prevents it. Well, why can’t you ask the manufacturer for new content via RSS and upload it to yourself? Is it really that hard to do? I’m ready to give my Youtube content, just don’t make me do it manually.
Youtube is to blame for its failure. If we further develop criticism, what prevents us from organizing a news stream from user videos? Citizen journalism is today's reality. Remember how many videos were recently downloaded from Iran. Every day, a lot is laid out on the occasion of incidents shot on the phone. Who is stopping me from linking this content to Google Maps? For example, based on ip and information specified in the video description. Technologically - banal mash-up.
In the spring of 2007, together with two fellow students, I developed a business project for such media. Even at the stage of marketing research, we wondered why Youtube, being part of Google’s possessions, still hasn’t linked its content with Google Maps? Where is the synergy? After all, the solution is obvious. It lies on the surface, but things are still there.
So don’t be afraid of Youtube. Use it as an additional distribution channel. But first, read these materials:
