Improve ICQ design?

In a recent discussion, I came across a Yolenzo comment , where he suggested his ICQ design improvements .
I liked these improvements, and I tried to further refine these changes. The comment was blurred, and the minusers, unfortunately, did not write the reason. But the topic is very interesting. Not necessarily I'm right, not necessarily the author of the comment. In any case, I would like to know the option that is most convenient for the user.
    Let's see in more detail?

    Original redesign

A lot of garbage, messengers are needed to send messages.

    My attempt

I must say right away - this is not the final version of the design (as opposed to the top image), but rather a concept, a sketch of a slightly different layout of elements and other functionality. Do not expect beauty, I’ll add gloss after the arrangement is shaken.

Background. Bright white on many monitors is too blind, especially for those over 25 and who often use this window.
I would increase the gaps between the lines and between the characters, increase the font size (all together increase readability by several times), make a notification symbol on the left (even if the very two simple characters are “more”), or simply remove it by replacing the line with blinking.
Further, the inscription "Online" is also superfluous - if in the "show only those who are online" mode, that is, also remove it.
In the example, the contact list is too small. As a rule, he is larger. Therefore, I would do 2 modes - viewing "as is" by default (or better - by the frequency of communication), and using the button - temporarily switch to sorting mode by name (if you need to find a rare contact), and would automatically turn it off when finding the right one contact, and turned on when you click on the scroller. Also, when scrolling, it would include an index to the left of the scroller.
Well, the problem of contact groups has not been solved, but this is a separate big story.
