DivX adds support for H.264 and MKV

On Habré went unnoticed great news from DivX. The company said that DivX 7 will now include support for the H.264 codec, as well as the Matroska container (MKV). Accordingly, all new players and other devices with DivX support will now support these very latest standards, which on torrents have become the de facto standard for digitizing and compressing high-resolution video.

Previously, video files compressed by H.264 and Matryoshka doll could be viewed only on a personal computer and on a small number of rare devices with Matryoshka support: for example, the Popcorn Hour and Netgear EVA9150) Now MKV will become the universally recognized standard that will be supported on most household devices (they will be marked with the DivX Plus HD logo).

The first companies to license the updated codec package were chip makers Sigma Designs and Trident Microsystems. Soon, new chips will go into mass production. Of course, the new standard is backward compatible with all previous versions of MPEG-4 codecs.
