A new degree of density. 260 GB in a 1.8-inch HDD

At CEATEC, TDK announced its new 260GB hard drive. Thanks to the use of the prototype TMR head, TDK was able to push all of this volume into a 1.8-inch form factor.

Thus, TDK broke the density record, which now stands at 803 gigabits per square inch. The previous one belonged to Toshiba and was equal to “only” 378 gigabits per square inch. This result was achieved by combining the use of new perpendicular magnetic recording technology and the very TMR heads.

TDK engineers claim that their task now is to achieve a density of 1 terabit of information per 1 square inch.
