Note: The following is a translation of the MSDN article “Building High Performance HTML Pages,” which provides some tips from Microsoft experts on optimizing page load times. It is very interesting to compare their approach with the similar approach for Yahoo! . In my opinion, most of the tips are no longer so relevant (thanks to Zeroglif , all the tips given are likely ten years ago), but at one time they were all very effective. My comments are further in italics.

The Internet, intranets ( internal corporate portals) and extranets ( everything that is in the public domain ) contain a lot of information. Now much of this information is HTML.in one form or another .

The communications capabilities provided by Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and later have helped turn the Web into a powerful space where you can work and play. The number of HTML pages and their complexity, together with the total number of consumers of the final products, significantly increased the total Internet traffic. Together with all the benefits that application developers have received, this has led to a number of problems. Among these problems can be identified:

  • Content delivery over the Internet ( across the wire ).
  • Once delivered, the content should quickly display on the screen.

This article offers some tips on maximizing the performance of your pages.
