The prototype of the bionic eye will allow people who have lost their sight to see again

The world's first prototype of a bionic eye implant, which allows people who have lost their vision to restore their vision, was created as part of the Boston Retinal Implant Project. The device is implanted on the back of the eyeball and works as a transmitter of light waves directly to the brain, to which it is connected by nerve fibers with a thickness less than hair.

The technology has certain limitations. In particular, the bionic eye will not allow the blind to recover from sight or suffering from glaucoma. Yes, and restore vision to perfect with it - for now, too, from the realm of fantasy. An implant works only with more or less functional optical nerves and can to some extent restore vision only to those who could see before. But, even despite the shortcomings, this is an amazing development. The bionic eye provides the blind with an overall picture of the environment, allowing them to at least to some extent receive visual information and, as a result, live a fuller life.

It is clear that the development team is not going to stop there. The researchers plan to improve the prototype so that it allows the recognition of small details, such as, for example, facial expressions.
