Android rival officially released

While all the public's attention is focused on the loud announcement of the Android mobile operating system from the Open Handset Alliance industry group led by Google, the Linux Phone Standards Forum (LiPS) alliance has prepared for release its version of the mobile Linux standard. Work on LiPS Release 1.0 has been going on since 2005, and a preliminary version of the specifications was released back in June, long before Android, which is why it is rightfully considered the first Linux standard for phones.

The nonprofit LiPS project is conceptually different from the designs of Google, the Open Handset Alliance, LiMo and other corporate alliances. In contrast, the LiPS forum aims to create a truly open and universal standard. The specific differences between the real LiPS standard and de facto standards like Android (which will be released under the Apache 2.0 license) are explained in this document .

Compared to the June release, LiPS Release 1.0 adds a number of new components, including an API for telephony, instant messaging, calendar, presence status, and new interface elements.
