The number of Internet users in Moldova last year doubled to 459.5 thousand, the press service of the National Agency for Telecommunications and Informatics (ANREI) said. Only 4.6% of their number has broadband access.
The monthly fee for access services on the local network per month is from 80 to 160 lei (1 lei = 2 rubles). Access using ADSL technology at a speed of 256 kb / s costs an average of 250-300 lei per month.
According to the National Agency for Regulation in Telecommunications and Informatics, in 2006, there were 41 licensed companies providing data transmission and Internet access services in Moldova, another 17 companies were engaged in the resale of access services through local networks. Agency experts believe that this year broadband growth rates will be higher than those for dial-up. Over the past few years, the local provider market has shown the following dynamics: in 2004 it grew by 5.5%, in 2005 - by 35.2%, in 2006 - by 49.5%.
