DirectX 10 will drag gamers to Vista

Until today, the main evolutionary leap in the development of DirectX interfaces has been the addition of software pixel shaders in the eighth version. No subsequent innovations can even come close to what happened now, experts say .

DirectX 10 is a brand new development that was formerly known under the code name Windows Graphics Foundation. For the first time in a decade, “gaming” software interfaces have been completely redone from scratch. There is little doubt that due to DX 10 all gamers will switch to Windows Vista, since the new APIs will not work on any operating system other than Vista.

Among the most significant advantages that DX 10 brings are completely new three-dimensional effects, an order of magnitude better detail of 3D objects and moving objects, and a reduction in the load on the central processor. In addition to this, the sky, clouds, smoke, wool, forest, reflections on water and other surfaces began to look much more realistic under DX 10.

From the developer's point of view, the main innovation in DX 10 is the new driver model (Windows Display Driver Model), which has not changed since Windows NT4. Each driver should consist of two parts: User Mode Driver (UMD) and Kernel Mode Driver (KMD).

You can get some idea about the DX 10 if you watch high-definition video(1280 x 720; 1 min. 42 sec .; 93 MB) recorded on a Windows Vista machine with the specially optimized Crysis game . That's very beautiful. Below is just a couple of screenshots. According to experts, to realize the maximum capabilities of the game plan for systems running Windows Vista, you will need three main components: video cards of a completely new type, such as the Nvidia GeForce 8000, the operating system Windows Vista, and completely new games. Only when all three of these components with support for DX 10 become available, we will in practice evaluate the performance, graphic effects and other advantages of the new generation platforms.
