Firefox 2: Improving Spell Checking

Initially, the dictionary is not quite complete and does not know a large number of modern and widely-spread terms on the Internet. This may not be very convenient if you write blog posts daily, comment on topics on Habré, or just write a lot using the mail web interface. To some extent, this can be solved by installing additional dictionaries (for example, from here ).
But there are several more ways to improve the performance of the spellchecker. All these methods equally use the text file persdict.dat , which contains a set of words from the user dictionary, located in the directory " C: \ Documents and Settings \ [user] \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Profiles \ [profile name] ".

    Add multiple words at once

Instead of adding every unknown word through the context menu of web forms, you can immediately drive the ones you need by simply opening the persdict.dat file in notepad.

Use lists of common terms and names

There are sites containing similar lists of names of well-known companies , or common computer terms . By copying the entire list, you can replenish the FF dictionary database very well.

Use the custom MS Office dictionary

If you use MS Office, you will surely periodically add words unknown to its built-in spellchecker to the custom dictionary. So why not use it?
We go to the directory "C: \ Documents and Settings \ [user] \ Application Data \ Microsoft \ Proof "and copy the contents of the custom.dic file to our persdict.dat.

Before carrying out all the above operations with the file, you need to close the browser. You can edit the user dictionary in any text editor, entering each word on a new line. In the same way, you can delete words that were entered by mistake.

Enable spell checking in all text fields

As didaio said in the translation , by default spell checking is not carried out in all form elements, but only in multiline text fields . Make it possible to check and single-field by changing the parameter from a standard value layout.spellcheckDefault 1 to 2didaioby first opening the advanced settings page FF about: config .

At the moment, these are all possible ways to improve the built-in spellchecker, which allow you to easily expand its vocabulary to meet modern requirements for communicating on the network.
