Pensioners are introduced into social networks
An interesting study of the age of the audience of popular social sites was conducted by comScore. At the same time, a whole series of rather unexpected facts was revealed.
It turned out that the very similar social networks MySpace , Facebook , Friendster and Xanga had an audience of completely different ages.
The oldest are MySpace and Friendster users. Men and women over 25 account for 68% and 71% of the audience, respectively. For comparison, every fifth visitor to the Xanga site has not yet turned 18 years old. In this social network, the proportion of children is twice as high as usual.
Facebook also occupies its niche, which initially positioned itself as a service for students and schoolchildren.
It is interesting to compare the audience of each social site with the average demographic picture on the American Internet. Then you can get an idea of what age people are more likely to register with in such services. As you might expect, these are primarily users aged 18-24. But experts say that the audience of social networks is rapidly aging. This is especially evident in MySpace.
A significant event has recently taken place on MySpace. The number of users aged 35 and over exceeded the number of young users. Thus. the average age of users definitely exceeded the mark of 35 years. People from 35 to 54 years old make up 40.6% of the entire MySpace audience. This is even higher than the average on the Internet.
User aging has occurred very quickly. Back in August 2005, users from 35 to 54 years old were 32.4%, and now they are already 40.6%. The number of elderly people 55 years and older has grown from 7.1% to 11%. At the same time, the share of young users 12-17 years old was halved from 24.7% to 11.9%.
