Stat.nic.ru miscalculated?

An authoritative source of statistical information on the zones .ru and .su stat.nic.ru has long been used as the main “writing teller” among Russian hosters and registrars. It is clear that the error in the operation of the service is inevitable and acceptable within reasonable limits, however, the data collected on this output surprised me very much.

For the experiment, I took a list of all the domains registered in the .ru zone (taken in the public domain, who needs it - google). The list dated December 10, 2006 contained 694542 domains. Using a straightforward script, name servers were defined for each domain. For those who want to repeat: use host, dig - as you like best. For each name server, the number of supported domains was calculated. Thus, an alternative rating was compiled. Here are the TOP-20 DNS servers for December 10 according to stat.nic.ru (in parentheses are my data):

As you can see, the numbers displayed in the statistics of the Center are higher than those I received. How could this happen? Rummaging through the results, I came to the conclusion that the statistics for stat.nic.ru statistics are taken from whois. It is known that if a domain was delegated to name servers, and then for some reason either the name servers stopped responding, or the zone was deleted or corrupted, the domain remains in the “Delegated” status and whois remains the same name servers. However, in this case, the zone for the domain will be unavailable and the list of name servers will fail. Therefore, the Rucentr Center, based on whois data, continues to take into account in its statistics even those domains for which zones on specific name servers are no longer located.

It is worth noting that, from the point of view of terminology, delegation is the recording of information about authorized name servers for a domain name. Those. Domain delegation status itself does not guarantee zone availability. However, this feature strongly distorts the information about the really serviced domains on the name servers at this particular moment in time.
