Microsoft has banned other browsers and search engines in the integrated search for Windows 10

Cortana (Cortana) - a virtual voice assistant with elements of artificial intelligence - can no longer send search queries to other search engines, only to Bing. It was also denied the right to open third-party browsers, such as Firefox or Chrome. Now, the Edge browser will become the exclusive browser for integrated search in Windows 10, Microsoft announced .

By default, the Internet search feature is activated in Windows 10. It can be disabled through group policies, in the registry, search settings, or firewall. Otherwise, searching the Internet is offered in the Windows 10 local search window or when communicating with the virtual assistant Cortana. At the same time, search queries are sent to Bing, and when you click on the link, the Edge browser is launched.

Until now, it was possible to change the behavior of the embedded search by setting another default search engine in Windows 10.and an alternate default browser. Then the search queries were sent not through the built-in search engine Windows 10, but through the search engine of another browser. When you click on the link in the integrated search, another browser was launched, for example, Firefox or Chrome.

Now Microsoft has disabled such a feature, regarding it as a “trick” of competitors.

“Unfortunately, with the increasing popularity and use of Windows 10, we observe how some programs bypass the rules of Windows 10 and redirect you to search engines that are not designed to work with Cortana,” says Microsoft in an official message . - This negatively affects the usability of the system, which becomes less reliable and predictable. The continuity of such task completion scenarios is broken if Cortana does not rely on Bing as a search provider and Edge as a browser.

The only way to confidently guarantee a personalized, end-to-end search process is the integration of Cortana, Edge and Bing - all of them are designed to do more for you. ”

Thus, now the built-in search for Windows 10 will work only through Bing and the Edge browser, even if another browser and default search engine are specified in the system settings of the operating system.
