How do we teach the French ecology and collect bottles

Students from the University of Paris-Saclay (France) became participants in a workshop on plastic processing, which takes place from July 1 to July 13, 2019 in the FabLab of NUST MISiS.

The course is dedicated to working with Precious Plastic machines. An open project by Dutchman Dave Hackens Precious Plastic is a global community dedicated to creating machines designed to recycle plastic waste into new raw materials and then into everyday items (containers, tools, urban furniture, etc.). The project is open: any enthusiast (a maker, designer or engineer) can assemble a car, and local communities will use it to process plastic waste.

As part of its long-standing and active cooperation, NUST MISiS and the University of Paris-Saclay have created a team of Russian and French students. During a two-week practice, students participate in the assembly of functional machines, the creation of technologies and the production of products for the development of the project.

It will be possible to get acquainted with the results of the work of the international student team at the final presentation, combined with the exhibition , which will be held on July 12 at 18:00 in FabLab of NUST MISiS (Krymsky Val, 3, NITU MISiS, building K).

A two-week practical course is not the only FabLab environmental initiative of NUST “MISiS”. The center also presented its own development - graduate of the master's degree in Digital Production Technologies Artyom Korotkov assembled a line for processing household plastic: a metal shredder shreds plastic bottles (and other plastic garbage) into flakes.

Plastic flakes are the starting material that can be used in other machines. In the injection machine, small plastic products can be cast from it, and in the compression machine, plates and overall plastic objects can be made. One kilogram of the source is about 50 plastic soda bottles. An innovative shredder can turn them into flakes in 10 minutes.

Material - empty plastic containers, 3D printing waste, etc. - The developer collects directly at the university. Part of the raw materials is plastic waste resulting from the activities of the FabLab center, in addition, student cafes operating on the territory of the university provide Artem with plastic for recycling.

In addition, the young startup is actively collaborating with other makers, sending details of his invention around the world. His client basket contains orders from various countries and parts of the world: European countries, USA, Uganda, Trinidad and Tabago, Hong Kong, Malaysia. The breadth of geography illustrates well the common need for all countries to solve the problems of ecology and informed consumption.

Such a project-oriented approach that meets both pressing environmental issues and the personal desire of people to create something unique is one of the fundamental principles of the FabLab philosophy. The master's program in Digital Production Technologies based on the FabLab NITU MISiS, which Artyom graduated from, is a vivid example of the fact that the philosophy of making and digital production is being consolidated in our society. Today, a program unique to Russia is aimed at training creative technicians who are able to apply competencies from different fields to create their own product from an idea to a full-scale implementation.

However, “own hand” does not mean “manually”. Students learn to work with Solid Works, Fusion 360, Cura and others, as well as with modern production facilities - laser cutting and engraving machines, 3D printers. Other academic disciplines include materials science, product design, machine learning, and applied electronics. In general, the entire educational process is built on the principle of CDIO (Think-Develop-Implement-Implement-Manage), that is, any theory is immediately fixed by practice.

Admission to the magistracy is open, you can submit documents until July 20, and find out the details here .
