Install ReactOS from a USB stick
Hello, Habr!
Eznovo we are! In the news about the release of 0.4.11 release, we said that thanks to the updated RAM disk driver ReactOS can not only be launched, but installed over the network using the PXE protocol .
However, a project volunteer under the nickname Illen found out that using the same new RAM disk driver, ReactOS can also be installed from a regular USB flash drive. Thus, release 0.4.11 was the first release to support the installation of ReactOS on computers without optical drives. Illen wrote detailed instructions and recorded a demo video.
Briefly about what is happening on the video:
Note that in the upcoming release with the number 0.4.12, the item “ 4. ” is not required to be fulfilled, since an improved algorithm for detecting and recounting available disks and partitions in the system has been introduced into the master branch , which takes into account the possible presence of removable devices .
We hasten to draw your attention to the fact that the ReactOS operating system has been receiving slots in the Google Summer of Code programming summer marathon for the fourth year in a row ! Google pays a scholarship, and you write code for ReactOS. Any students and graduate students can participate (because in the jurisdiction of the United States graduate students are considered PhD Students). Possible ideas for participation are listed on a special wiki page . You can discuss them in our new collaborative chat . Hurry up! Applications will end on April 9th!
We look forward to your comments and opinions! Do not forget that you can also help the project not only with donations , but simply by putting an asterisk on it on the github !
If you like reading my digests on how the development of the ReactOS operating system is progressing, and you want to see such publications more often - you can treat me with a cup of coffee by clicking on the button in the " Support the author " section right now under this article.

Briefly about what is happening on the video:
- The installation and live images of ReactOS are copied to the USB flash drive.
- A boot record is created, and the bootloader is configured to boot using the RAM method.
- Download from a USB flash drive, launch the installation image and the first stage of installation on the target computer.
- Downloading a ReactOS live image from a flash drive and adjusting freeldr.ini (an analogue of the boot.ini file) on the target computer.
- Booting from the disk of the target computer and completing the installation of ReactOS
