At the GDC 2016, AMD presented the most powerful graphics platform for creating and consuming VR content

Welcome to the iCover Blog Pages ! The series of expected exhibition events was continued by the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2016), which opened on March 14. The event, which this year will last until March 18, inclusive, has traditionally attracted the attention of leading developers of games and related technologies. One of the key events worth paying attention to was the announcement of AMD Radeon Pro Duo - the most powerful platform in the world for developers and end users of VR applications.

On March 14, 2016, AMD (NASDAQ: AMD), as part of the GDC 2016 events, introduced the most advanced and powerful system for working with virtual reality (VR) 1 to date, which can be used to create and consume VR content. AMD Radeon Pro DuoTogether with the proprietary technology package, LiquidVR SDK is a platform that supports almost all aspects of creating VR content of various specifics - from entertainment and education to materials related to journalism, medicine and cinema. The unique processing power of 16 teraflops allows you to get a turnkey solution for any current tasks of VR developers, allowing you to create modern virtual worlds in the workplace and enjoy the highest quality games with DirectX® 12 support during your holidays.

“With the growth of the power of computing platforms, new opportunities are created for reproducing truly exciting effects, and this is especially evident in working with virtual reality objects that impose special requirements on the performance and reliability of computing systems,” said Raja Koduri, senior vice is President and Lead Architect for Radeon Technologies Group at AMD.

Radeon Pro Duo is the world's first specialized platform for creators of VR content. She carries on board two graphic 28-nanometer Fiji processors. Each chip combines 4096 stream processors, 256 texture units and 64 rasterization units and reserves 4 GB of HBM video memory for itself. “These configuration options automatically take the AMD Radeon Pro Duo out of the competition, turning it into the world's most powerful graphics card,” said AMD Chris Hook, head of marketing at AMD.

Three eight-pin connectors (TDP at 525 W) provide power to the circuit; liquid cooling functions are entrusted to the Cooler Master system with a 120x120 mm radiator. The reference version has three DisplayPort 1.2a connectors and one HDMI 1.4a connector.

The task set for the Radeon Pro Duo developers was formulated something like this: "Assess what happens if you combine the capabilities of drivers for professional developers and game drivers and create a promising platform that will not only easily render applications, but also get the most out of the game process." - said Hook. The idea was realized and embodied in a dual-processor Radeon Pro Duo. According to Hook, such a solution will open up the possibility for developers to significantly reduce the influence of delay, which is critical when creating VR worlds.

Like nVidia, AMD considers virtual reality as one of the priority areas of development and invests heavily in development. One of the projects implemented by the company together with the Associated Press partner is a VR news aggregator. Another intriguing project is the development of a VR application based on the future movie Assassin's Creed, which is being conducted in conjunction with Fox Studios.

In free sale, the product will appear in the second quarter of this year at a recommended price of $ 1,500.

The difference in performance between different dual-processor graphics cards

A series of tests was conducted at AMD Performance Labs on March 7, 2016. Cards with two AMD Radeon Pro Duo GPUs, AMD Radeon R9 295X2 and Nvidia Titan Z with a test system based on Intel i7 5960X and 16GB of RAM took part in the "race".

We used AMD 15.301, Nvidia 361.91 drivers together, Windows 10 and 3DMark Fire Strike to simulate the load on the GPU.

At resolutions 1080p, 1440p and 2160P, the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 scored 16717, 9250 and 5121 points, respectively, Titan Z showed the result of 14945, 7740 and 4099 points, respectively. AMD Radeon Pro Duo finished by a noticeable margin, gaining 20150, 11466 and 6211 points respectively, overtaking both AMD Radeon R9 295X2 and Titan Z.

At the same time, AMD Radeon Pro Duo is the first product in the new AMD VR Ready Creator line. As part of the presentation, AMD announced a partnership with Crytek, with which it plans to launch a joint VR First program. The goal of the project is to teach students how to develop VR applications. As part of this program, it is planned to install computers equipped with AMD Radeon Pro Duo in college labs around the world. In the future, according to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, Crytek VR First can become a key tool that reveals and creates new talents in the VR environment, and at the same time stimulates the advancement of technology at the level of average users.
