As it became known this week , the Indian Point nuclear power plant in the village of Buchanan, New York State (USA) last December stopped working for several hours. The reason for the stop was bird droppings.

On December 14, 2015, the stream of droppings from the “Big Bird”, as indicated in the report, fell on the electrical equipment of the nuclear power plant, which led to an automatic shutdown. As explained in the report, the litter could get in contact when the bird took off and flew. The substance shorted the wires on the power line support, which led to the appearance of an electric arc.

The authors of the report mention that contact with the litter can cause a short circuit, a power outage and even death of a bird as a result of electric shock. Fortunately, no dead birds were found near the pylon.

It is also emphasized that the incident did not pose any threat to the environment or the public. It is planned to establish additional protection against birds in order to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Since June 2012, it was already the 13th unscheduled shutdown of the power plant. The report does not indicate how many of them were caused by bird excrement, and also what kind of birds they were. Maybe Siberian Cranes? ..
