Developed by scientists, the project for the restoration of active brain memory RAM (The Restoring Active Memory) will give people the opportunity to “forget” forever about memory loss in the coming years

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious cause of disability in the United States. This diagnosis has been made by more than 270,000 military since 2000 and affects about 1.7 million American civilians each year.

TBI often leads to impaired ability of the brain to extract memories formed before the injury, and also reduces the ability to form or save new memories after the injury. Despite the magnitude of the problem, several effective treatments currently exist to mitigate the long-term memory consequences of TBI, but do not allow the restoration and strengthening of existing neural connections that form memories. The RAM project aims to remedy this situation.

Backed by the Pentagon , DARPA Wikiin 2014 he announced the RAM project, for which $ 80 million will be spent in the next 5 years. This project is aimed at developing therapeutic technologies that cure, leading to memory loss, more than 300,000 veterans with head injuries.

DARPA scientists are creating a model of the principles of the brain that will be used in implants to interact with the brain's neural network.

DARPA has already tested temporary sensors in the brain during surgery. These early experiments made it possible to collect data from areas of the brain where memory formation processes take place.
RAM is one of the few bio-tenological projects that DARPA is researching. One of which is the main goal of DARPA - the creation of complete prostheses that work directly from the brain and use a wireless interface.

Based on these studies, researchers will attempt to integrate the computational models developed under the RAM project into subsequent implantable closed-loop systems capable of realizing targeted neural stimulation, which may ultimately help restore memory function. These studies will include volunteers with impaired creation and retrieval of declarative memories and / or volunteers undergoing neurosurgical interventions for other neurological disorders.

In addition to clinical trials in humans, RAM will be investigated in animals to expedite the creation of models for coding and retrieving complex memories and memory attributes, including their hierarchical associations with each other.

RAM is part of a broader plan of programs at DARPA that is being implemented by President Obama's Brain initiative.
