High-capacity battery review for Samsung Galaxy S5

Hi Geektimes! New smartphones appear almost every other day - to keep abreast of all the new products, you need to spend quite a lot of time reading news and specialized publications. Today we’ll talk not about the new product, but about the “aged” smartphone (by modern standards) - the Samsung Galaxy S5. It looks good, it has excellent technical specifications and the price / quality ratio at a very high level. Not surprisingly, this model is very popular - among readers of Habrahabr and Geektimes, this device is the third most popular among mobile devices, second only to the Apple iPhone and Apple iPad (data from Google Analytics on request). But as you know, the weak point of most smartphones (especially on Android) is the battery life - our company could not get past this problem with the Galaxy S5,

The capacity of a standard Samsung Galaxy S5 battery is 2800 mAh (3.85V, 10.78 Wh). In the active use mode, it provides the user with about 8-12 hours of battery life, in the inactive mode it can last a day. We agree that this is a good indicator, but you will agree that I would like more;) Therefore, we proceed to open the box with a battery of increased capacity from Mugen.

The device is delivered in a cardboard box.

To begin with, for most gadgets it is almost impossible to find a battery with a larger capacity so that it is identical in size to the regular one - if this is possible, then the difference in capacity will be minimal (as, for example, in non-original batteries for GoPro). In most cases, you will have to deal with a larger battery, and therefore with a non-original back panel. Few people think about this, choosing a battery according to the principle “if only more mAh in the name” is not a very correct approach. Even if you're lucky and you come across a high-quality noname-battery, there is a good chance of running into a poor-quality replacement panel. But it’s exactly you who you will feel with your hands every time you hold a smartphone in your hands - you are unlikely to like low-quality plastic, backlashes and other burrs.

Our proposal for the Galaxy S5 is a set of the battery and the back panel: The

size of the Mugen Power battery (HLI-SMG900XL) is twice as thick as the original.

To be more precise, the battery capacity is 5900 mAh (3.85V), which is twice as much as the regular one. We will test the working time a little later.

The thickness of the back cover is comparable to the thickness of the device itself, that is, the final thickness will be twice as much as the original. However, in any case, the smartphone in the hand will now feel different - it will seem unusually thick, you will have to get used to it again - you need to understand this from the beginning and be prepared. However, the addiction process will not take much time.

The texture of the back panel is identical to the original one, all system slots are taken into account in its relief.

The camera lens has a recess, which does not interfere with photographing with a flash (and this is +5 to protect the camera itself from external irritants).

Mugen Power's tactile lid is less slippery and less easily soiled. And as you already noticed, there is a Wireless Charging sticker on it (you can peel it off) - yes, only for this chip some accessory manufacturers want from $ 8 to $ 30 (for Galaxy S5), and we have it with a bonus built into the back panel - a trifle, but nice. If you have had experience using wireless charging, then you understand what it is about. If there was no experience, then it should be acquired: once "hooked" on this thing, you will not want to "get off" it.

Wireless charging via any Qi-enabled device

The back cover does not provide moisture-proof properties, however, we are working on such a device (however, it will already be without wireless charging). There is a perfectly even gap between the lid and the smartphone: The

lid can be either dark or light - you can choose from. It’s hard to tell more about the appearance of the kit, it's time to familiarize you with the test results. For the objectivity of the test, we did not “pretend that we were actively using the device” - we just found the user with the Galaxy S5, gave him our kit and asked to use the smartphone in the same rhythm as usual. And after that - treat us with screenshots of system indicators.

As you can see, with not very active use of the smartphone, it lasts for a maximum of 24 hours on the native battery, while the Mugen Power battery lasts for three days (all other things being equal):

Full charge time (more precisely, from 0 to 98% according to the screenshots ) is 4 hours.

And here is the user's impression:

“If earlier during the day I did not put the phone on charge, then by the evening I was almost guaranteed to be unconnected or close to it. Honestly, this created severe discomfort, anxiety, close to a state of stress. In a word - it was unpleasant, I was thinking about changing the smartphone, although it suited me to everyone else.

With the increased battery, the battery life of the device has significantly increased - now the feeling of alarm appears at the end of the second day :) It's a joke. As for the dimensions of the device - yes, the smartphone has become almost twice as thick, however, the dimensions and weight have remained at an acceptable level for me, moreover - I am pleased to feel the solidity of the device, which I received with an increase in operating time. Be that as it may, I am ready to make such sacrifices for the sake of autonomy. The rest - the pants do not fall and okay. "

Pros from using the Mugen Power kit:
    - A significant increase in battery life
    - Adds a wireless charging function
    - Additional protection for the camera module
    - And also this is a spare cover :)

    Cons:
    - The device becomes 2 times thicker (whisper: although someone is so solid on the contrary I like it)

At the time of writing, the cost of the kit is 5730 rubles , you can make an order directly on our website. To users of Habr and Geektimes we offer a 10% discount on all products from our website - use the GEEKTIMES code when ordering to receive it.

    And also
