The use of 3D printing and 3D scanning technologies to create the film “Terminator: Genesis”

Increasingly, you can find news about the use of 3D-technologies in popular culture and this is good news.
In the last film with the participation of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Artec 3D and Stratasys were noted when creating a make-up for the main character.

The guys from Legacy Effects, who created stunning special effects for the films Avengers, Avatar and Jurassic World, continue to delight us with their work. They published a new video in which they talk about the process of creating special effects for the last part of "Terminator".

When creating a make-up in the studio, they used the Artec MH 3D scanner , on the basis of which the Artec Eva model was created .

At the beginning of the video, it is shown how they scanned Arnold Schwarzenegger in 3D and "in the old fashioned way" took molds from him using silicone molds.

Scott Patton, lead designer of the company, explains why this was necessary: “Having made casts and several scans of Arnold, we loaded it all into Zbrush, cleaned it up, made it look beautiful, and then took the endocranium, placed it inside and started modeling as if we were working with real clay, as the layout for the very first film was once created. ”

The result was an impeccable layout on which parts of the endo-skull are visible under the skin of the Terminator's face.

For the manufacture of master models of T-800 parts , a Stratasys 3D printer was usedWith a print quality of 16 microns, it prints using PolyJet technology.

The final, assembled and painted T-800 looks like this:

The processes of creating special effects using 3D scanning technology , 3D printing , and casting in silicone for the film can be seen in this video:
