Ex-CEO of Bitcoin Exchange Mt. Gox arrested for cryptocurrency theft

Mark Karpelès, the former head of the Bitcoin exchange Mt.Gox, which was previously the largest digital currency market, was arrested in Japan . Tokyo police announced the arrest of Karls on Saturday morning, in his own home. Mark Karpls is accused of stealing $ 1 million through certain manipulations with the algorithms of Mt.Gox.

Japanese law provides for the possibility of detention without formal charge for up to 23 days. However, there is no possibility of making a deposit.

The arrest is probably due to the concerted actions of former exchange customers who one day learned that all the bitcoins from their accounts disappeared. The company launched a bankruptcy protection procedure in February 2014, after a statement of the loss of $ 450 million (equivalent to Bitcoin) from its wallets. Then Karpls went to court to begin debt restructuring in bankruptcy protection. This gave temporary immunity from claims of creditors, and the ability to maintain company management. The next step is the assessment of all your assets and debts, as well as an explanation of possible further actions. All this information is publicly available.

Later, the company "discovered" $ 100 million (in the equivalent of bitcoins) on one of the wallets, but everything else was gone, it seems, irrevocably. Now the exchange is approximately in the middle of the liquidation process.

The representative of Karls has not yet given official comments, but the ex-leader himself has already stated that the police’s allegations are false and he will deny everything.
