It seems that in the near future we will be able to see if not living dinosaurs, then at least mammoths - shaggy elephants, adapted to the cooling of the climate and forced the first people, hunters from the Paleolithic, about 10,000 years ago. According to one hypothesis, it was the hunt of ancient people that caused the extinction of these animals. The last mammoths lived on Wrangel Island just over 3,000 years ago. But now modern people are trying to resurrect them.

Cloning of a mammoth is done by at least two groups of researchers. A center "Molecular Paleontology" was opened in Yakutia a week agoon the basis of the Northeast Federal University. MK Ammosov, where they will study the DNA of both mammoths and other fossil animals. 90% of the finds of prehistoric animals were found in Yakutia. Now scientists have good material from the remains of a mammoth who lived 43,000 years ago. They managed to extract bones, blood and a whole trunk from the frozen ground. The study is being conducted with the involvement of specialists from South Korea.

Meanwhile, scientists from Harvard University announced the successful transplantation of mammoth genes to an Asian elephant using the CRISPR method.. They took genes from mammoth DNA from Wrangel Island, with particular emphasis on cold resistance genes, which are responsible for hairiness, ear size, subcutaneous fat and hemoglobin. Researchers claim that they now have living cells of elephants with mammoth DNA, however, they are in no hurry to publish research results in a scientific journal.
