Why did Mail.ru limit the files uploaded to the “Cloud” to two gigabytes?

On December 22, Mail.ru announced that on December 30, 2014 the beta period for Mail.ru Clouds would end. The company decided to mark this event with two restrictions: firstly, from December 30, new users can get only 25 GB of free space instead of the starting 100 GB, as it was before. Secondly, in the Cloud, you can no longer save files weighing more than 2 GB. Prior to this, the 2 GB limit was only for users of the web version of the cloud, while client users could upload files weighing up to 32 GB to the cloud. Already downloaded heavy files are still available without any restrictions.

The company comments on these restrictions as follows:

    • Statistics show that now the cloud volume of an active user is on average 3-5 GB, so this space should be enough with a margin.
    • according to internal statistics, today less than 1% of users store in the Cloud at least one file weighing more than 1 GB.

Let me remind you that a year ago, from December 20, 2013 to January 20, 2014, Mail.ru held a promotion to distribute “Clouds” a terabyte of storage for free and forever. Then she was accompanied by a scandal related to ambiguous formulations in the user agreement, which ended with its correction . Nevertheless, the action brought “crazy traffic” to the “Cloud”, and now, it turns out, when the promotion tasks are solved, you can get rid of “less than 1% of users” that store heavy files and take up more than average 3-5 GB?
