BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS: an unusual Korean recorder with a budget price and excellent video quality

    Greetings to dear readers of Geektimes! With you again, Alexander Shub - an expert in the field of car DVRs. Let me remind you that my experience in testing devices of this type has exceeded five years, and the number of closely studied models is approaching two hundred. Today on our cutting table is the South Korean BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS DVR . Exactly like that, on a chopping board, - I’ll not just talk about its capabilities and features, but I will also analyze this model. This is not a superfluous moment, believe me: sometimes this or that electronic device looks perfect, but here in its depths you can find very remarkable evidence of the developers' disregard for creating their brainchild. (Here is an example of such a situation: dismantledtwo identical registrars in appearance, but inside they turned out to be very different.)

    BlackVue company has been present on the Russian market since 2013, while having about 80 percent of the market in the “from 20 thousand rubles” segment. That is, four out of five premium autoregs sold in Russia bear the BlackVue brand. In Korea, the company’s situation is even better: there it is the undisputed market leader, selling more than a million devices per year (the volume of the entire auto market in Russia, by the way, in 2015 did not exceed 2.5 million units). BlackVue products are also sold in the United States, Britain and several other European countries.

    The registrars are assembled at their own factories, and a team of fifty professional engineers is responsible for the development. This is for you, damn it, not 4-5 Chinese after technical training - these are precisely the "teams of pain and despair" that usually stand behind the Chinese autoregist. With the corresponding results ...

    Among the know-how developed in BlackVue, it is worth highlighting the cylindrical form factor for registrars - it first appeared in BlackVue models. Later, both the Chinese and the less well-known Koreans - ThinkWare, FineVu, Cowon - copied this rather successful form (yes, the latter has been engaged not only in MP3 players for a long time).

    Another know-how of BlackVue, already this year 2016, is cloud services that allow you to turn the registrar into a car alarm and a full-fledged tracking system for the machine, plus broadcast video recorded by the registrar to the Internet in real time. This is not found in any other DVRs of any other manufacturers - only in the top-end BlackVue family DR650S.

    As for our hero, BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS, then, as the developers themselves say, “the most budget premium recorder with GPS” ... Stop! It sounds strange somehow - here you have both “budget” and “premium” ones. But in fact, there is logic in such an ornate characteristic. The BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS is indeed the most inexpensive (13 250 rubles) recorder with a GPS module in the BlackVue line, only its version without GPS is cheaper - BlackVue DR450-1CH (11 450 rubles). On the other hand, the model in question is really premium - at least in terms of video recording quality - and this is the most important thing for the registrar. In terms of this very quality, the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS video is comparable to the same models of the BlackVue DR650S line, which stand for the “twenty”, and significantly outperforms the top Chinese models offered for 12-13 thousand rubles.

    In general, the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS is one of the most inexpensive “tickets” to the world of Korean recorders. This “ticket” does not belong to the first class, of course, but rather to a place in the economy, but one should not forget that if the Korean regs can be compared just with an airplane in terms of technology, then the Chinese and Chinese-Russian ones cannot the most modern train. The analogy, I think, is clear.

    Specifications

    Design

    The BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS, like most other BlackVue models, has a cylindrical shape. The material is plastic, the assembly is very neat. In general, the ideal fit of the panels in the recorders is rare, and it was all the more pleasant to see it here.

    The lens is located on the front panel, which is logical. Below it is an LED, notifying the user that the recorder is recording.

    On the other side, which looks into the cabin, there are GPS and video indicators, as well as a speaker. Since there is no screen in the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS, the speaker plays an especially important role: it is with its help that messages about the activation of certain operating modes are reproduced - for example, “recording has begun”. System alerts are played in a pleasant female voice, moreover in Russian. It's nice that in Korea, they attended to a thorough Russification of the device.

    On the right side of the case there is a lid with an opening opening access to the power ports and connecting an external GPS-receiver. If you move the cover to the side, we will see a slot for a memory card. Please note: a loop comes out of the recorder case, passing through the cover when the latter is closed.

    I did not immediately understand what it was; then it turned out that BlackVue offered to protect the memory card from being removed using ... a padlock. Why might this be needed? Well, let's say, if something very extraordinary came to the record, and there are certain individuals who are interested in the inconspicuous theft of a memory card. The registrar themselves, they probably will not steal (the owner will immediately notice), but they will want to pull the flash drive. I understand that all this is far-fetched and resembles the plot of a second-rate action movie, and, nevertheless, BlackVue has this official picture:

    However, the chips with memory card protection also have a quite practical application - when in companies with their own fleet (it does not matter, passenger or cargo transportation) it is necessary to seal the slot and deprive drivers and unauthorized persons of unauthorized management access to microSD. Well, such a scenario already sounds much more realistic.

    There are ventilation holes on the bottom of the case - you can’t do without them in this case, since the case of the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS is very compact (length - 116 mm, diameter - 34 mm), and the iron is very serious, otherwise it would simply not have been possible this quality video.

    Accordingly, active cooling of this powerful iron is necessary. Here, on the lower edge, is a microphone.

    The holder on the windshield looks like a ring with a pad on which 3M adhesive tape is pasted. The recorder is inserted into the ring until it clicks, and is removed after pressing the button. BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS can be rotated in a ring around its axis, aiming autoreg on the road. To make it convenient for the user to remember the correct position, there are several serifs on the ring.

    In this case, the recorder can be rotated in a ring so that it looks into the salon. This is relevant for recording a conversation with a traffic police officer who sat in the passenger seat. But deploy BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS to the side, to the driver’s door, alas, will not work. Well, yes, there’s nothing to complain about if you opted for Korean registrars - the specifics of models from this country almost never implies any turns in fastening left or right.

    The external GPS-receiver, both in size and in appearance, resembles pedometers like the Xiaomi Mi Band. The thin cable and in general the external design of the module allows you to easily place it wherever you are comfortable, well, or where the radio-transparent section is located on the heated windshield. Well, do not forget that the external design is also good because it provides better communication with satellites - there is no interference from the registrar's inside, as is often the case when a GPS navigation module is installed inside the case.

    Parse!

    "Recovering" the Korean cylinder was not so simple, but I managed to do it with the help of my fellow colleagues. By the way, when the Datakam company conducted a comparative analysis of registrars in the summer of 2015, the BlackVue model turned out to be the most difficult to “dismember”. At the same time, it turned out that BlackVue installed boards of the 2012 release in the devices sold, but now the company has improved. In the surveyed apparatus, the “motherboards” were manufactured at the end of 2015.

    The BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS filling made the most pleasant impression: there were no traces of sloppy soldering, inscriptions with a marker on the board, glue streaks and other signs of Chinese deshman. Everything is very neat - reminiscent of the insides of the iPhone or top-end Samsung smartphones. Please note that the RAM modules are made by Samsung - and this also suggests that the developers did not save on the components, since RAM from the Korean manufacturer is noticeably more expensive than the Chinese counterparts and differs in significantly higher quality.

    On the board there is an indication of Pittasoft - the parent company of BlackVue; this, in turn, suggests that the board is its own development; it was not ordered from a third company. To understand: even the Taiwanese Mio, far from the last in terms of technology, the player in the registrar market, does not always create boards itself.

    Mio MiVue 588 - there is no mention of the brand as a developer on the board.

    In addition, pay attention - judging by the inscription, the motherboard is designed specifically for the BlackVue DR450-1CH, this is not some kind of universal platform of Chinese noname developers.

    In general, from an analysis of the interiors of the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS, it can be concluded that the South Korean specialists are not familiar with the word “hack” in terms of assembly. And this is not an isolated case - I analyzed all the current models of the company and I can say with confidence that we are talking about a high culture of production as a whole.

    Functionality and Settings

    Configuring the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS is only possible from a computer using the BlackVue Viewer program, which exists in versions for Windows and macOS. Support for the latest OS is encouraging, as registrar developers usually ignore it. But you cannot control our registrar from a mobile device: Wi-Fi is not in it, Wi-Fi should go to the more sophisticated (and more expensive) BlackVue models.

    We turn on the recorder with the inserted USB flash drive - and the BlackVue Viewer is copied to the media from the device’s memory. Then the USB flash drive can be inserted into the card reader on the PC, after which we will get access to the BlackVue Viewer. The following can be changed in it.

    • select the duration of the recording in cyclic mode - 1, 2 or 3 minutes;
    • select the duration of the recording in the parking mode - 1, 2 or 3 minutes;
    • select a video resolution (Full HD, 15 or 30 fps; HD, 15 or 30 fps);
    • adjust the brightness of the video;
    • set the image quality (of course, you should choose the "highest");
    • include stamps of date, time and custom text on the video;
    • enable sound recording;
    • set automatic inclusion of parking mode;
    • adjust the sensitivity of the accelerometer, including, according to data from any specific video, which I personally have never seen before. Very convenient!
    • configure the operation of LED indicators;
    • set up voice notifications;
    • view the video by sorting the videos by the type of event (regular loop recording, recording according to the “direction” of the accelerometer, recording by the motion sensor in the parking mode). Viewing is possible with overlapping Google Maps - for this, in fact, you need GPS, as well as to determine the exact time and speed.

    As mentioned above, there are three recording modes in the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS. About the usual loop recording, we can only say that the videos are written “overlapping”, that is, in each new video there is the last second of the old one.

    Files created in the event mode, that is, by the "order" of the accelerometer, include 5 seconds before the incident - impact, sudden braking, reversal, and so on. Such files are placed in a special area on the memory card and are not deleted during cyclic dubbing.

    Well, the third type of recording: according to the motion sensor, that is, when a certain object appears in the camera’s field of view in the parking mode. There is one important nuance here: in the case of the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS, for recording in parking mode with the engine turned off, you need to buy the Power Magic Pro accessory for 3,000 rubles, which allows you to turn the recorder directly into the electrical system of the machine. Because there is no battery in the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS, there is only a supercapacitor, which I will discuss below.

    The main highlight of the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS: high quality video

    As I said at the very beginning, the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS does not have many options that are the standard for registrars of this company. But on the video part, the developers did not save a single won. The model uses a Sony Exmor matrix with a resolution of 2 megapixels, which is more than enough to record Full HD-video. The lens is made of professional glass with an enlightened coating and has a viewing angle of 118 degrees, that is, standard for registrars. She doesn’t give any more information about the BlackVue stuffing, which reminds me personally of Apple, which does not officially comment on the amount of RAM in the iPhone: they say it works and works fine, and if so, then the user does not need to provide any extra data.

    So BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS perfectly writes video. I do not really like this word (“excellent”) in the reviews, but in this case it’s a sin not to use it. Because the hero of this material provides a very clear, clear and generally beautiful picture without distortion. And both during the day and in the dark. The latter is especially important. Like the same smartphones, many registrars today can shoot well in the sun. But with a drop in lighting intensity, serious problems begin with detail, clarity, and everything else. However, the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS is different: it, in my opinion, doesn’t care at all - day or night. Although, of course, at night the distance to read numbers is smaller: not 17-20 meters, as in the afternoon, but only 12-15. But this is a lot compared even with expensive (up to 15 thousand) Chinese registrars, which in the dark “give out” 8-10 meters. One third less!

    Of the minuses due to Korean specifics, it is worth noting the lack of a battery in the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS. There is only a supercapacitor that allows you to complete recording in the event of an accident, when the recorder may lose contact with the car's on-board electrical system. However, the supercapacitor has one indisputable advantage: it allows you to start recording without problems at temperatures up to minus 15 in the unheated passenger compartment. Registrars with familiar batteries in such situations often fail until the cabin “freezes” (which is about 10 minutes), since lithium-polymer batteries are very afraid of cold weather.

    Equipment

    • the recorder with mounting on 3M tape;
    • spare sticker with 3M tape for fastening;
    • external GPS-module on 3M tape;
    • power cable with a plug in the cigarette lighter;
    • five sites on 3M tape for neatly laying cables in the cabin;
    • attention: a special plastic lever for conveniently tearing off platforms with 3M from the windshield. It’s a very correct accessory, since drivers often use a screwdriver to tear it off, and then they wonder where the scratches come from on the glass;
    • flash drive for 8 GB class 10. Fast and good card, optimal volume. It is curious that the card has the BlackVue logo, that is, it was produced directly under the company's registrars. This is a sign of a serious approach - when a company orders the production of flash drives for its gadgets (which ensures the maximum level of compatibility possible), and does not take ready-made solutions;
    • card reader. A pleasant trifle, and in some cases also irreplaceable: in some modern laptops there are no memory card slots at all.

    Conclusion

    What can I say? Decent device. Plus, by the standards of BlackVue, it’s not very expensive: “only” 13,250 rubles. Yes, there is no Wi-Fi here, which complicates the process of setting up the recorder and watching videos from it - you need to either look for a laptop / desktop, or insert a memory card into a smartphone, which is not always possible. Yes, there are no cloud services either, as well as security systems like LDWS and speed camera alerts. But do not forget that the main thing in the registrar is still video recording. And here the BlackVue DR450-1CH GPS plays out in full, since it takes off at the device level from the same BlackVue at a cost of 20 thousand rubles. And all these Chinese with their whistles and buzzers raise white flags. In general, I sincerely recommend it to all lovers of quality things that perfectly fulfill the functions assigned to them. You’ll hardly feel sorry
