I’m my mother’s engineer: the final of the NTI Olympiad

In late April, we had the opportunity to attend the first All-Russian Children's Engineering Olympiad NTI (National Technology Initiative). In total, almost 5,000 children participated in the Olympiad , but less than 100 reached the final. The organizers of the first All-Russian NTI Olympiad were 3 polytechnic universities: Moscow, St. Petersburg and Tomsk. Since our studio is based in the building of the Moscow Polytechnic, we were invited to cover this event on our channel. We didn’t think for a long time, packed our things and went to the Krasnodar Territory, or rather, the Eaglet Center “Orlyonok” - the dream of any Soviet schoolboy. Next, under the cut video and photo.

Actually, I want to start with a video, which was the purpose of our trip.

    Now about personal experiences.

First, we were pessimistic, because, unfortunately, many educational initiatives in our country are divorced from reality and ineffective. The NTI Olympiad is a pleasant exception to this rule.

If we interviewed some children before the Olympics, and when asked about motivation, they answered that they were just interested in trying, then during and after the Olympics their eyes were already “burning” and you understand that they will never forget this week of engineering competitions . As for the organizational staff, since we were lodged with them, we became witnesses to their titanic work when they returned to the hotel after 23:00 and sat by 5 a.m. and analyzed feedback, sorted out the mistakes, and at 8 a.m. we ran to to children. We are now busy installing a vlog where we will try to show more backstage.

The event also had flaws, for example, the guys complained about the lack of sockets in the rooms of the dormitory building. But, apparently, Soviet children did not need sockets for phones :)

But seriously, as soon as we noticed some kind of flaw, we immediately heard the designation of this flaw from the organizing committee. For example, one of the ideas in the framework of the feedback was that it was necessary to make the sets of designers more “flexible” so that the creative task was both at the assembly stage and at the programming stage. Also next year, the organizers want to scale up the event.

What pleased us the most was the fact that the leaders of educational institutions realized that schools needed engineering circles, and not just labor lessons. We hope this Olympiad will be a small step in a long journey to popularize science and technology among those who will build the future in which we will live! The general partner of the Olympiad was RVK. Special thanks for the opportunity to attend this event!
