Which browser is the fastest: September 2015

    Google Chrome has introduced a variety of improvements in memory usage . Mozila is preparing to switch to a multi-threaded tab architecture and on January 26 will make the signature of Firefox extensions mandatory . More recently, Windows 10 came out, and Edge, written from scratch, has been in the release for more than a month. In the ongoing browser war, new battle conditions have developed, which the VentureBeat edition has tested . 8 different tests were carried out. Putting it all briefly, Edge won 3 tests, Chrome 3 and Firefox 2. Safari, Internet Explorer and others were not rated.

    Test results are compiled in the table below. The winning result of each test is highlighted in bold.

    What was generally evaluated?

    For tests at VentureBeat we took a computer with an Intel Core i5 4440 processor (6 MB cache, 3.10 GHz base frequency), 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 460. We divided the 500 GB hard drive with a rotation speed of 7200 rpm into parts. In a new area of 75 GB, fresh Windows 10 Pro (64-bit version) was installed, and then all updates available at that time were rolled onto the OS. The image was displayed on a 24-inch monitor with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. Of course, attempts to repeat these tests will lead to different values of their results due to differences in computer performance and software versions.

    The following versions of browsers were used in the tests:

    • Google Chrome 45.0.2454.85;
    • Mozilla Firefox 40.0.3;
    • Microsoft Edge 20.10240.16384.0.

    SunSpider version 1.0.2 is a benchmark for the core JavaScript components, but not for DOM elements or other browser APIs. Its purpose is to find out the browser’s performance in tasks that exist in the real world, as well as possible in the near future. Developed by the WebKit team. In this test, Edge finished margin.

    Octane is a JavaScript benchmark from Google. Version 2.0 was used. Strange, but the Chrome browser itself did not win in this test. Although Google’s browser came off Firefox, Edge also won.

    The Kraken JavaScript engine speed benchmark wasdeveloped by Firefox creator Mozilla. The test was conducted in version 1.1, here Chrome got the first placefollowed by Edge and Firefox.

    JetStream version 1.1 was written by Apple. The benchmark conducts several JavaScript tests, and then considers the geometric mean of their results. Here the first place was taken by Edge .

    The OortOnline.gl online application measures the performance of WebGL, a JavaScript component for rendering 2D and 3D graphics. This is a test from the creators of the same game . In terms of scores, Chrome was ahead , Firefox was not far away, and Edge was a bit behind. Futuremark’s

    Peacekeeper, a developer of computer benchmarks, takes into account many aspects of the browser, mainly rendering, mathematical operations, and memory. Won Firefox Test, and the low Edge result is apparently caused by the lack of the necessary codecs.

    The WebXPRT benchmark version 1.998 was written by the benchmark manufacturer Principled Technologies. Firefox handled this task best .

    As the name implies, HTML5Test tests the implementation of the fifth revision standards for the HTML markup language. Maximum compliance with standards is estimated at 555 points, this is the limit of this test. Chrome got the best score , and Edge has work to do.

    In general, none of the browsers showed a significant advantage over the others. According to the test results, all three have approximately equally good performance. But the most interesting thing is that the browser, which is installed by default in Windows, does not lag behind. Will Edge be able to win a chunk of the audience of Chrome and Firefox? The browser war continues.
