Is Google's real threat?

Recently, the former CEO of AOL Inc. Steve Case held another startup competition, in which the new search engine Leap.it. became the winner. It would seem, why does the world need another search engine? What is so new they suggested that they hit the jackpot in the amount of 100 thousand dollars, and even received 3 million investments? Let's figure it out.
According to the developers themselves, their main difference is as follows:
The search engine is socially based. Search results depend on what's trending on Twitter and other networks, which are then integrated with web results.

[Our] search engine is built on a social basis. The search results depend on the number of mentions on Twitter and other social networks, then they are integrated with the received web results.

That is, the relevance of the issue is determined not only by the indexing of the site on the network, but also by the number of its references on social networks, especially on Twitter. Among other things, the following two can be distinguished from the special features of the new search engine: the output is not in the form of links, but is visualized (which negatively affects the time it takes to form the result page), and “perspectives” - group queries. These very “prospects” allow in theory to get something meaningful for queries like:
“Best Actors of the Past 50 Years” or things to do in New York City or the best amusement park rides.

"The best actors in the last 50 years" or what to do in New York or the best amusement park.

But the key word, as always, is “in theory”. I decided to conduct my own test and compare Leap.it and Google on queries other than those kindly provided by Forbes as an example from the creators of the search engine (on these specific three queries, by the way, Leap.it did provide meaningful information in “ prospects ", but Google did not push). Russian-language Twitter is quite extensive, so I thought it would be honest to enter requests in Russian.
So, the first request from the category “what’s easier”: the best actors in 20 years. The results of Google, despite the fact that he gave only links to the site, and did not evaluate the situation himself, are nevertheless more informative than the results of Leap.it. By the way, in the output of Leap.it, English-language sites were somehow worming around. So there is no doubt 1-0 in favor of Google.

The workout is over. Next request: the best song in the history of mankind. You all see for yourself. 2: 0

And the last question that worries many: what is the meaning of life? Google on the case issued the first link to Wikipedia, Leap.it - obscure freaks. 3-0.

So, in a fair fight, Google defeated.

Of course, this whole test is just a joke. Leap.it is a really interesting idea that has great potential, but at the moment the system is still very damp and not finalized. Developers will have to do a lot more, for example, to speed up the load time of the results and optimize for different languages. Can Leap.it become a threat to Google? At the moment, it is unlikely. Google search robot is incomparable with anything in the search for information, which is the main direction of the search giant, but in the niche of "social search" it is still inferior to Leap.it. On the other hand, loyal fans and fans gathered around it for the whole time of Google’s existence, and what can I say, a whole cult of Google has formed, which Leap.it definitely doesn’t have. On the third hand, Google and Leap.it are generally not competitors due to the different directions of search. So the loud statement of the founders of Leap.it about their call to Google is nothing more than PR and empty words. At least for now.
