We are testing the OceanStor Dorado V3 array: so ordinary that right in general

    In general, it is an array as an array. There are new NVMe disks on it. You get good performance "for the same money." But there are two nuances. The nuances are: it is good in the ratio of “cost per GB + performance” and it is not American, that is, it suits those who are under sanctions.

    We calmly tested it for ourselves, when suddenly a very excited customer appeared on the horizon. He had a hybrid storage system with running out of support, where the controller flew. Storage is not the newest and drives in a hundred. Without a controller, performance dropped a lot. Wait a new six weeks. Colleagues fought in a panic, simultaneously begging us to somehow reduce the delivery time of the new controller in some unknown way. CROC can do anything. Sometimes even more.

    We had a new Dorado piece of hardware in our tests. They really didn’t have time to break in, but it seemed normal. They explained, looked at each other - and allowed to drive just at that time, while the new controller will float. During the day, everyone migrated, but left the old system as a reserve.

    The new controller did sail even a little earlier than expected. It's time to change back. They reported that they are ready to carry out replacement work. In response, they told us an amazing story about the fact that reports now generate an order of magnitude faster, and he would consider this piece of iron for good. And they don’t even need the old. The client has standard operations with the database: closing the day, reporting for the month, etc. These operations were not accelerated by an order of magnitude, of course, but according to our measurements a little less than three times.

    In general, we were not opposed to giving the patient, but wanted to complete the tests. Therefore, when the controller arrived, they took it for two weeks to their place, pulled parts, scoffed, made a reassessment and returned it to the customer. Users who managed to get used to the good, by this time, have finished pecking the admin body. Counted everything. It turns out pretty in the market. In general, normal money, a competitive solution, but the client has already lowered the budget for this year. We offered him an array with installment payment for three years. Business approved, accounting approved, the question is already at the finish.

    Now why is Dorada cheaper than the market? The array is cheaper because the Huawei makes half the chips with their own labor hands. Street-price the price is the same as that of competitors, but there are more discounts - thanks to the vendor's own production, there is much to fall.

    -controller arrays Active \ Active (disk shelves are connected via SAS3.0). If desired, there may be even more controllers (at the moment - up to six, and after NG they promise as much as eight).

    FlashLink provides up to 4 million IOPS with a stable delay of no more than 500 μs. HyperMetro functionality provides an extended logical drive operating in the Active-Active mode, which guarantees data availability at the level of 99.9999% with a delay of 1 ms.
    The disc developers on this project (both hardware and firmware) worked together with the developers of the storage system. As a result, firmware was optimized for hardware and for the logic of work - the effect is visible not only in performance: everything began to work with less impact on the product, but also in additional functionality such as replication and snapshots.

    Fault tolerance also became higher. Departure of three disks allows you to continue working without interrupting the service.

    Tests


    Testing was performed on the OceanStor Dorado5000 V3 storage system with 25 SSD drives. Two moons of 2 TB in size from the array were given to the virtual machine on the ESX host. Before the tests, the moons were filled with 100% random data.

    According to the test results, the array showed excellent performance for any type of access.



    Results:

    • excellent performance;
    • nice and responsive interface;
    • there is almost all the necessary functionality (except for synchronous replication), there is a metro cluster, compression and deduplication;
    • installation in 5 minutes.

    Storage is suitable for 99% of tasks requiring Full FLASH storage. On tests and in battle proved to be excellent. And Huawei can be carried out as import substitution.That goes another good plus.

    The piece of iron is great for heavily loaded applications. The main emphasis in its creation was placed on high performance, reliability and low response time.
