Sean Pierce was the founder of the open source projects JGit and Gerrit Code Reveiw . It was a great honor for me to work with him on the same project, despite the fact that we were from different sides of the Atlantic Ocean and worked in different companies.

People talk a lot about real leaders , but getting to know someone like Sean for more than eight years is completely different. We both started with the same idea in 2008, before we met each other. Sean sought to make Git scalable for its implementation in the Android OpenSource project and began to rewrite Rietvielda pure Java project, while my goal was to expand the use of Git in large enterprises around the world using the GitEnterprise.com service .

All embracing ideas

We first met face to face in 2011 at GitTogether in Mountain View CA at Googleplex. Sean was the initiator of this famous "non-conference . " This place was an incubator of ideas and the creation of minds, who spent time together to exchange and enrich each other's experiences with new revolutionary concepts.

I was a newbie and I did not know anyone on the project. My ideas were very different from what people were discussing in the hall . Then I got up and, inspired by the experience and success of Jenkins CI, suggested changing the architecture of the project and making it fully plug-in.

Sean had no idea who I was, where I came from, what experience I have and what I worked on: he simply answered: “Yes, that makes sense. Would you like to join and help us? ”I did so, we worked together for a week, so my journey with Sean began.

Inspirational people

What I liked about Sean was his unique style of project management . He never announced or presented himself with a certain pathos at conferences, but everyone knew who he was and when he entered the room, he attracted everyone's attention.

He passionately talked about the problems that he himself faced on the project, and always expanded the boundaries that the project can achieve. This passion was contagious. He never told people what to do and still left everyone so that they could make mistakes , on which they could learn and improve.

Sean was the seed, thanks to which the project grew far beyond its original size and capabilities.. He was able to take promising young people such as Dave Borowitz, who only a year ago started working as an intern at Google and allowed him to rewrite the entire backend for implementing NoteDB .

Humanity first

Sean was bright and brilliant, but what inspired me the most was his passion for his children and his loving family . He is used to having his son come to our Hackathons for the weekend and be with his father. He combined his family life with his daily work and passion. The best moment that I remember is when we had a “hacker barbecue” at sunset in his new house in San Jose, located opposite beautiful hills , Noah played in the garden and hugged his loving father.

He always looked towards the unification of the needs of his family and the existence and responsibilities of the Gerrit project, which everyone remembered, since people are the most important part of it.

Devotion

The loss of Sean was unexpected for many people: he continued to publish the code and reply to letters until the very last days. He implemented the new OpenSSH support at Gerrit back in November 2017 and liaised with the community and members until Christmas. His last commit was made on January 3, 2018, he always made commits until the very end of his life.

He never publicly revealed his illness and how serious it is. I lived his life in his best ideas and passions to the very end, with his family, his project and all that he loved most.

Sean's legacy

When such great leaders as Sean leave, there is always the danger of leaving a void behind. I believe that it is impossible to replace Sean because he was a truly unique leader in his style and passion.

However, what he created is an active and healthy community that will continue to uphold the values that he has instilled in us with his professional and personal inspiring life.

What Sean created, he defined as a “healthy living project” that could survive his life and our existence. Below 10 years of the project in numbers.
