Pay or not pay: Netflix allows users to share accounts for free

Reed Hastings, founder and CEO of Netflix, an American online cinema , speaking at the CES conference, said he was positive about exchanging accounts between users. In his opinion, this is normal when they exchange passwords and provide each other access to accounts.

As far as this is “right” or “wrong”, no one has yet given a definite answer. Online streaming has become widespread in the world relatively recently, so uniform and strict rules have not yet been developed. Users are sometimes completely ignorant of how their actions comply with any norms of behavior or fit into the framework of the law.

Not only the Netflix CEO, but also other owners of streaming services and film companies are tolerant of exchanging accounts. HBO President Richard Plepler believes that such an exchange or donation is a kind of marketing tool. Thanks to this, more people learn about the service, and as a result, its audience grows due to this.

In confirmation, Reed Hastings notes that many people who use someone else's account then purchase a paid Netflix subscription themselves. He cited the example of children using their parent account. Allegedly, when a child grows up, he will want to issue a paid subscription personally for himself. True, Netflix already provides family accounts, where each family member has his own profile, reminds TechCrunch.

Netflix and HBO hope that not only children (who can buy it only after a few years), but all those adults who take an account “for trial” from friends and acquaintances will massively purchase a paid subscription.

“Today you are witnessing the birth of a global television network. Wherever you live now - in Sydney, St. Petersburg, Singapore or Seoul - you can be part of a revolution in the Internet TV market, ” said Reed Hastings , founder of the American online cinema Netflix, at the CES conference. He announced that Netflix is now available in 190 countries, including Russia.

Since January 6, the service has become available on the Russian media market for Smart TV users and owners of some set-top boxes.

Netflix shows movies based on the geographic location of the viewer, based on an analysis of the IP address. That is, when connecting from Runet, the user will receive one set of films - “Russian”, when entering from the American IP address - “American”. As of January 8, 2016, the American Netflix collection was attended by 4,591 films and 1,157 series - 5,748 items in total. The Russian collection of records is about 8 times smaller: 522 films, 200 series, or 722 titles in total.
