Juniper workshop: JunOS as a second language

Workshops “JunOS as a second language” were held at the MUK UTs (Kiev) on July 30 and 31, 2015, where students in practice learned to work with the main operating system of Juniper Networks solutions.

These seminars were aimed at introducing the JunOS operating system to network engineers who previously had experience working only with Cisco-like CLIs (Cisco, Brocade, Huawei, ZTE, etc.). At the workshops, both theoretically and practically, the features and logic of the operating system, which is installed on all lines of Juniper equipment, were examined.

It was not a simple seminar - in the form of theoretical theory, but there was a real workshop where students tried to do something with their own hands, configure SRX gateways.

Under the cut report, video of the workshop and cheat sheets that were distributed to the audience -

Juniper hardware configured by listeners is 3 in one: switching, routing, and encrypted traffic.

Examples of Juniper equipment the students worked with:

SRX100 Gateway

SRX220 Router

  • SRX220 Services Gateway with PoE and without Mini-PIMs: 327 BTU / hour (96 W)
  • SRX220 Services Gateway with PoE and two Mini-PIMs: 692 BTU / hour (203 W)

Noise level
51.1 dB per EN ISO 7779

On each desk there were 2 pieces of hardware that were in the same AS and it was necessary to make basic interface settings, aggregation, configure OSPF, raise BGP and configure route advertisements.

The workshop was technical, it was so hardcore that the managers left without understanding a word, and for engineers it was a paradise! During the seminar, the instructor all the time made comparisons with competitors and peers, so that students who already have experience with similar solutions could compare the work.

It is clear that it was not possible to cover the entire huge pool of JunOS teams, but the workshop served as the basis for those engineers who plan to work with JunOS in the future.

The instructor spread a very wide range of equipment configurations in front of the students. The instructor himself has extensive practical experience in customizing the solutions that he talked about, all the time giving examples of how and where it works.

A few words about Juniper in Ukraine . Juniper customers in Ukraine are various providers: from home Internet providers to hosting providers. The largest implementation of Juniper solutions and technologies in Ukraine is Ukrtelecom.

Juniper has a single management console, the instructor touched on all aspects of network console settings. In particular, much attention was paid to the configuration of the equipment. In particular, in cases where 2-3 people or more configure the equipment, scenarios were considered to make everything in the equipment configuration transparent, especially since Juniper never use proprietary protocols in their decisions.

What else to tell?
Since Juniper and UMUC UC plans to conduct such workshops regularly, the audience was asked about which area among the wide selection of Juniper students would like to practice.

Here is a video of the entire workshop. Since this is a workshop, this, for the most part, is precisely the practical development of the necessary skills and experience, we did not decipher the transcript, as we usually do. For the reason that the answers, labs, cases that the students did were situational and were aimed at the educational process “here and now”.

But, for those who still want to familiarize themselves with the workshop recording in detail, we apply the cheat sheets that were at the disposal of the workshop participants. If you have any questions about the workshop or any other question about Juniper, we will always help:

All participants in the reviews noted that they would use the acquired skills and experience in their professional activities.

If you want to sign up for the following such workshops by Juniper:

At the end of the workshop there was a survey. We are also conducting a survey, which of the wide range of Juniper solutions would you like to learn about at similar or similar workshops?
