Spherical screens for UAV operators and remotely controlled vehicles

Every year, the development of controlled devices is gaining momentum. Today, the main purpose of military robotics can include intelligence operations and demining. However, many countries around the world are already developing technologies for creating combat autonomous robots. For example, the United States has allocated more than $ 200 billion to the Future Combat System program. Indeed, according to the Pentagon’s plan, by 2015 a third of the US Army’s armament will be autonomous combat devices.

Of course, not only the United States is interested in this, Israel, India, South Korea, China and other countries are also implementing similar programs. In this topic, one of the leading places is receiving remote control technology. Today they use visualization through standard monitors, they use virtual reality glasses. For example, Norway uses virtual reality goggles for maneuvers in urban areas.

Russia also does not stand still, EnterAidias presents the project “Spherical screens for UAV and remote-controlled equipment operators”. Startups are actively developing their own technology for visualizing the operator’s workplace, which controls remote objects. They conducted a series of experiments based on the use of virtual reality glasses and took into account the analysis of the physics of the operator’s eye. This work helped to find and develop the right innovative solution - a full-dome image system. (Fig. 1)

Comparative diagram of the visualization workspaces of different technologies:

Black is the visualization area of the standard monitor.
Green is the visualization area with virtual reality glasses.
Blue is an area visualized by full-dome technology.

Users of virtual reality glasses complain about the fact that it is possible to work for no more than three hours, because even the most insignificant viewing angles force a person to turn his head, which, of course, leads to a decrease in attention and fatigue. The effect of peripheral vision does not work either. The spherical solution VS Oculus Rift helps to avoid such problems as a short operator time, a small viewing angle, unnatural visualization for humans, which means it is the next generation solution.

Most recently, the project “Spherical Screens for UAV Operators and Remote-Controlled Equipment” went to the final of the Industrial track of the largest startup competition in Russia, GenerationS.

The project developers ultimately promise a modern product that meets all the tasks that an operator may have in the course of work. The technology will help increase the level of effectiveness of remote control of military and other equipment.
