Unboxing NetApp E2700

We continue to acquaint you with the equipment as it is: large, on all sides and without a wrapper.
In this article we will take a closer look at the representative of NetApp E2700 block storage systems , which came to us a week ago for testing. The main areas of application of these systems are: full motion video, media content, seismic data processing, video surveillance, high-performance computing clusters (HPC), D2D backup, exploration, etc.
Who is interested - attention! We begin)
Vendor's words
As they say, no one will say better about the product than PR vendors of its vendor :-) We will quote several key suggestions from one NetApp brochure on the new E2700 series.
“NetApp E2700 Storage is a simple storage solution for SAN environments. It easily integrates into almost any application-based storage environment, offers many hosting options and supports various types of disks and disk shelves.
High rates of IOPS and throughput allow you to optimize the level of performance without complicating the infrastructure and increasing the cost of maintenance, power and the purchase of additional disk space.
The intuitive interface of the E2700 simplifies its installation and maintenance, and also provides access to all enterprise-class features that provide consistent performance, data integrity and security. ”
Quite a lot of flattering words, and I agree with them.
Open the box
There are 3 models in the E2700 series product line: E2712, E2724 and E2760. The last two digits (12, 24 and 60) indicate the number of discs in the basket. This time we got the NetApp E2724 model with 24 drives, respectively.
It is 2 units in height. I quote the dimensions and weight in a plate from the official website.
Dimensions and Weight | System Switch E2760 DE6600 Expansion Shelf | System Switch E2724 DE5600 Expansion Shelf | System Switch E2712 DE1600 Expansion Shelf |
---|---|---|---|
Height | 7.0 "(17.78 cm) | 3.47 "(8.81 cm) | 3.4 "(8.64 cm) |
Width | 19 "(48.26 cm) | 19 "(48.26 cm) | 19 "(48.26 cm) |
Depth | 32.5 "(82.55 cm) | 19.6 "(49.78 cm) | 21.75 "(55.25 cm) |
Weight (max.) | 232 lbs (105.2 kg) | 57.32 lbs (26 kg) | 59.52 lbs (27 kg) |
Actually, this is what came: The

box is quite small, weighing 26 kg, do not look that 110 kg on the box is intimidation :-) We open the box. Unlike the disks that NetApp sends in gigantic boxes with a bunch of foam, everything looks modest here. Saved space even with rails, compactly placing them in the grooves of the package. Pretty practical.
This is how the rails and their fastening look:

How can it be without documentation? “Quick start guide” and “Safety Notice” at your request! Side caps and console cable with mini-USB connector in the same package.

Appearance and dimensions
Get rid of polyethylene and cardboard. Take a closer look at the rear view. Four FRUs (Field Replaceable Unit) - easily replaceable modules supporting hot swapping in case of failure, are grouped in pairs: 2 storage controllers and 2 power supplies. Controllers on top :-) Replaced quite easily and quickly. The E2700 controllers are equipped with SAS 12Gb / s ports in the base, and support expansion via Host Interface Cards (HIC) with FC 16G, iSCSI 10G ports, as well as additional SAS 12G ports. "What is" from left to right:

- Dual Ethernet Management Ports
- 12 Gb SAS Host Interface Ports
- USB - Factory Use Only
- Serial Port (Mini-USB)
- 6 Gb SAS Disk Expansion Ports

Taking out the controller, look inside. The lid opens from the bottom, so we need to turn it over. Inside we find:

- Controller Processor LSI SAS 3108 (“Invader”) dual-core ROC
- Controller Flash 32 GB for SANtricity OS and cache offload (two 16 GB mSATA modules)
- Controller Memory 8 GB
- Controller Battery - I took it out, because could not resist the blue latch.
By the way, if you see blue plastic mounts, then this module is easily replaceable.

The E2700 series supports the ability to combine different types of drives in a single storage system (SAS, NL-SAS and SSD drives). You can increase storage volumes using disk shelves for 12, 24 and 60 disks. An additional 7 shelves can be connected to the E2724.
The maximum number of disks is up to 192 pieces with expansion shelves and 120 solid-state drives with expansion modules for 24 drives. The maximum raw capacity is 28.8TB, with expandability up to 700.8TB (168 4TB drives in additional shelves + 24 1.2TB drives in a basket with controllers).
E2760 / DE6600 60 Drives in 4U | E2724 / DE5600 24 Drives in 2U | E2712 / DE1600 12 Drives in 2U | |
---|---|---|---|
SSD | 800GB 2.5 "drives / max 25 SSD | 800GB 2.5 "drives | --- |
SAS | 1.2TB, 900GB, 600GB (10K) 2.5 "drives | 1.2TB, 900GB, 600GB (10K) 2.5 "drives | 600GB (15K) (individual drive add-on for existing systems only) |
NL-SAS | 4TB, 3TB, 2TB (7.2k) 3.5 "drives | --- | 4TB, 3TB, 2TB (7.2k) 3.5 "drives |
Expansion shelves | 2 | 7 | fifteen |
Drives | 180 | 192 | 192 |
Capacity | 720TB (4TB drives) | 230TB (1.2TB drives) | 768TB (4TB drives) |
A 12-disk shelf is ideal for organizations on a budget who need high-performance and high-capacity drives. A 24-disk shelf allows you to achieve maximum performance per unit while reducing power consumption to a minimum. A 60-disk shelf increases storage density and allows you to store up to 240 TB of data in 4U racks, which is especially important for environments with high demand for disk space.
Supported disk expansion shelves:
- DE6600 (4U, 60 drives): 2.5 "10,000 rpm SAS 1.2 TB / 900 GB / 600 GB (fully encrypted / incompletely encrypted); 3.5" 7200 rpm 4/3 / 2 TB (with full encryption / with incomplete encryption); 800GB SSD drives
- DE5600 (2U, 24 drives): 2.5 "10,000 rpm SAS 1.2 TB / 900 GB / 600 GB; 800GB SSD drives
- DE1600 (2U, 12 drives): 7200 rpm SAS 4/3/2 TB
Since the system was taken for a test, we were not interested in volumes, so our array is equipped with 600 GB SAS disks.

We carefully assemble everything back, put it in a rack and begin to prepare for testing.
For approximately another 2 weeks, this storage system will be in our test. After which we plan to publish a post with its results. Then you will have the opportunity to test the storage system in person. Leave applications for testing .
PS A distinctive feature of this model is the lower cost per terabyte of usable space. View NetApp E2700 Special Prices . By the way, NetApp first allowed them to publish!
