The video recorded the most powerful collision of a meteorite with the moon

On September 11, 2013, a meteorite with a diameter of about 1 meter and a weight of about 400 kg crashed into the surface of the moon at a speed of about 61,000 km / h. The flash was so bright (8 seconds, 2.9 ± 0.2.s. at its peak) that it could be seen from Earth with the naked eye. Astronomers from the Spanish Observatory at the University of Huelva managed to record this event .

This is the strongest of the collisions of meteorites with the moon ever recorded on video.

After the collision, a crater with a diameter of more than 40 meters remained on the lunar surface. According to experts, the collision energy corresponds to an explosion of approximately 15.6 ± 2.5 tons of TNT.

The meteorite collision observation results of September 11, 2013 were published in the latest issue of Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

It should be noted that stones of this size do not pose a danger to the Earth, because they almost completely burn out in the atmosphere. For example, the Chelyabinsk meteorite, which fell on the earth’s surface on February 15, 2013, had a size of about 17 meters and a mass of 10,000 tons by the time it entered the atmosphere.
