Changes to CCIE R&S 5th

It's no secret that CCIE is one of the most influential and significant certifications in IT. Another major update is coming, and I wanted to highlight its main changes.

As always, getting the coveted number involves two steps:
    • A written exam
    • 8 hours laboratory work

    A written exam

The 400-101 exam lasts 2 hours and consists of 90 to 110 questions. All questions are independent of each other. Successful surrender gives the right to a lab.
Previously, the exam consisted of 11 sections, but the structure was revised and now it consists of 6:

    1. Network Principles - basic network principles. There is no topic in the laboratory exam.
    2. Layer 2 Technologies
    3. Layer 3 Technologies
    4. VPN Technologies.
    5. Infrastructure security
    6. Infrastructure services

    New topics:
IOS-XE, VSS, ISIS, EIGRP OTP, L2VPN, GETVPN.

Topics that were in the lab of version 4 and now passed to the written exam:
    PfR, L2QoS, IPv6 Multicast, 802.1x.

    Removed from the exam:
Frame-Relay, FRTS, LFI, WRR / SRR, ZBF, IPS, RSVP, WCCP.

    Lab exam

8-hour laboratory work with a lunch break. Consists, unlike the previous version, not of two, but of three modules. As in the written exam, everything is in English. Geographically, the exam takes place on the territory of Cisco. The closest office to Moscow with a lab is in Brussels, but a mobile arrives in Moscow twice a year. The place, time and free places can be viewed through the site if you pass the written exam.
Laba is 100% virtual. Used iOS 15.3T, 15.0S. Jobs and topology are provided through the Web interface. Full blueprint is available here .

    Troubleshooting

The section lasts 2 hours, but unlike the previous version, now you can "take" 30 minutes from the settings section. A large topology of ~ 30 devices and problems observed on the network are given. You need to fix the problem without breaking anything. A ticket counts as resolved only if completed in full. In most cases, incidents are not related to each other. The description of all is visible immediately. The order of solution does not matter.

    ts topology

Do not be afraid of such a large topology, usually to localize the problem does not present great difficulties.

    DIAG

There are no devices with which you need to work directly in this module. Independent scenarios introduce you to the role of a support engineer who investigates the incident. It is required to analyze, identify, localize and explain the reason. As tools are given: correspondence, network topologies, session logs from the console, syslog log, captured traffic. Something like a written exam, but just with huge descriptions. A partial assessment of the responses is possible. It takes 30 minutes.

    Configuration

Final section lasting from 5 to 5:30 hours. All tasks are visible immediately. Topologies L2, IGP, BGP, VPN are available. Partially completed tasks do not count. Jobs may involve implicit troubleshooting. By and large, no different from the previous version.

Here are briefly and all the main differences. Be persistent and confident in your abilities. And of course, good luck with this not-so-simple task.
