OpenSUSE 13.1 release

Today a new release of the popular openSUSE 13.1 distribution kit has been released .

Stability

The new release was tested by the updated openQA automated testing tool. The Btrfs file system has been thoroughly tested . Now it, although not used by default, is considered stable enough for constant use. This release has been selected for Evergreen , a three-year support cycle.

Network

New Apache , MySQL and MariaDB . New Ruby 2.0 on Rails 4.0 . Added the ability to mount Amazon s3 . New Samba 4.1 with improved support for Windows domains.

Development

OpenSUSE is moving forward with AArch64, making openSUSE ready for the upcoming generation of 64-bit ARM devices. Support for 32-bit ARM devices has been greatly improved and a special assembly has been made for the Raspberry Pi. This release also contains GCC 4.8 with new bug reporting capabilities, the latest Glibc , C11 and Intel TSX Lock Elision . New SDL2 , Qt 5.1 , QML and C ++ 11 .

Shine

Significantly improved fonts thanks to the new Freetype 2.5 . YaST has been ported to Ruby.

Speed

New video accelerator with VDPAU support in MESA and an optimized version of Glibc for 32-bit systems.

Creation

Desktop users will appreciate the integration of Android devices into the KDE file manager and Amarok music player. Artists will appreciate Krita's new enhancements. GNOME Shell allows applications to change the display of the top and system panels and thereby make more efficient use of screen space.

Innovation

This release contains a number of experimental technologies. For example, preliminary support for Wayland in GNOME Shell and KDE Plasma Desktop, as well as support for ultra-high screen resolutions.
