Getting to AgileCamp 2013, which ScrumTrek held in Taganrog, was not so easy. I had to fly through Rostov and get from Rostov by train with the working class. But when the camp began, I never regretted the time spent on the road. The opening went unnoticed, as the opening of events should take place. And they all went their separate tracks. I stayed on the process track. I probably could have done the engineering track myself. The track began with a fun "seating". It was very difficult to decide between “smart” and “beautiful” - a facilitator and a generator of ideas. As a result, at each table, each team included one facilitator and an idea generator.
The first exercise was performance. It was necessary to interview the neighbor. Ask for the name, surname, company and three facts about the person, and then introduce him to the team. A similar exercise was at the Induction training at AT Consulting.

    Marshmallow challenge

After meeting - immediately into battle. Well-known in narrow circles, the marshmellow challenge was new to me. The essence of the marshmellow challenge is that the team must build a tower of several macoronins, scotch tape, rope and marshmallows, so that it was higher than that of other teams and stood for as long as possible. It was difficult to convince the team that you need to try and first build a small tower, as soon as possible, and then improve. The trainer was told exactly what to do after the challenge. The guys from my team tried to read when measuring the height of the tower, but they did not succeed.

    Scrum Simulation

    Product Owner talks about Martians:

Then, after the break, we went on to simulate scrum. I will omit the theory; it is full on the Internet. We chose a product partner and a scrum master in the team. We chose a project on which we will work. A brochure with advertising rest on earth for Martians. We started to generate backlog. No matter how much I tried to convince the team that our fantasies at the next stage would come to us and draw, no one listened to me. What fun began when they began to carry out their tasks and draw brochures. The counselors also had to get everyone to show their products to the audience. That would be more fun. In general, it’s not the first time I’ve been participating in a scrum simulation, even once I conducted my training myself. And the feeling that the simulation needs to be done somehow differently does not leave me. Although the main communication problems of the team, it highlights perfectly.

    Business model canvas

What I liked about AgileCamp was a minimum of theory and a maximum of practice. It is through practical exercise that you need to carry the aggile to the masses, which ScrumTrek successfully does. After lunch, it came to the Business Model Canvas. Actually what was the most interesting and useful for me at this camp. We also chose a product. This time it was a mobile application for movie lovers. It was a good idea to stick items on stickers from flipcharts. When we did the Business Model Canvas on the board for a distance learning project, we really lacked this life hack. Otherwise, unfortunately, I did not learn anything new about the Business Model Canvas, since my expectations for ScrumTrek were somewhat overstated. Again, during this exercise, the team’s communication problem arose. Although this time there were a few points, when the team listened carefully to me on some issues. I really did not understand how to repeat this experience in the future.

    Story Mapping Persons

    image
From BMC, we gradually turned to persons. Again, my expectations were somewhat overstated and exactly the same thing the guys and I did in our time for the distance learning project. By the end of the day, obviously, everyone was tired and the process went a bit sluggishly. As a result, we got people with whom we will continue to work literally now.

In addition to the camp exercises themselves, I came to recharge my batteries and organize my knowledge in the field a bit. And also come up with a concept for changing processes in the company in which I currently work. Both goals have been successfully achieved.
