Easy way to play old games with 3dfx emulation
Also, someone could know about this, but for some reason I did not find any materials about how cool it works. If someone can supplement me - please.
My idea is to give the happiness of playing old games to as many people as possible, to make it as simple and high-quality as possible. In my opinion, I found the best way, without much effort, in maximum quality to play classic games anywhere and anytime. It is also quick and easy to install a modern game and play.
If you need very serious knowledge for something, not everyone will appreciate it. And playing old games is becoming increasingly difficult, and for some it is almost impossible.
But not now.
If you are minus - indicate the reason, it is important to me.
If you want to know what to do right away, scroll down to the last paragraph.
After the new year, a wave of nostalgia swept over me, this often happens to me, but this time it pressed very hard. Before that, I had several attempts to revive my childhood friends, but for various reasons they ended without much success. And then I still came across the first, very rare pilot issue of Twisted Metal, the very first part released by a batch of 5000 copies only for Japan. Yes, for a computer, for Windows 95! Under the 98th, she also promised to work, especially since I didn’t have the 95th and with the 98th I’m somehow better friends. As soon as I collected my nostalgic computer for myself, installed some games, how my girlfriend occupied it, they saw that the last photoshop didn’t work under the 98th Windows and everything’s not like that, “what the hell did you install here, generally this is my computer, you there’s a new one. ”
Happiness was short-lived. On my working locomotive, dispersed by the most, do not mess around, what I can not play the saddest part of because I can play games with Windows 7 x64, even with all compatibility profiles and fixes, and new games don’t bring joy. Ok, I put XP to her, all games were wound up on her with compatibility profiles, even that rarity, TwistedMetal under Windows 95! The joy was even more short-lived, as my joy either made things up with the drivers because of my photoshop, or I installed as usual FIG knows that FIG knows why, but only a couple of games started to run from my collection. At least stop crying. The third computer is purely for games in the apartment there is nowhere to put corny.
He experimented with virtuals for a long time, some allegedly supported full-fledged 3D acceleration, but in reality weeks of disembodied efforts went on, everything either didn't work, or it worked unstably. I almost forgot about the pleasure of the game, I just continued to dig in this direction.
My next “find” was the image of the 95th Windows under the dosbox, with Voodoo emulation!
I found it here, by chance, in the comments I found a link to YOSHWON’s DOSBox with preinstalled Russian Windows 95 OSR2 + DirectX6, and the last firewood for virtual Voodoo, I found transporting it for several months with other combinations of OSes and virtual machines:
osvirtual.net/en / microsoft-windows-95-with-software
There was a lot of joy, but again, not for long, the music played. You can’t forward your CD-ROM there, many games require a disk or are not installed from the folder on the HDD, but it took me almost a month to install DaemonTools, I tried other virtual drives, it was of little use. I won’t say what he demanded and what I installed and how, so as not to confuse you with my experience, I’ll just say that version 347 is needed, it exists on the Internet, with different sizes of the installation file, with different working capacity and it requires installation of another 3 4 programs. If someone goes this way and gets a stable system - I will be very happy to hear how he did it. I can also tell you what I did and I will give all the materials that I have.
Anyway, pleased, I was able to get a working image of the system with DT, I was able to install several games ... And then I was disappointed. No game is playable, sorry for the pun. In many there are screensavers, in almost all the menus are slowed down, none of them could work for longer than a couple of seconds, then either a flight with an appeal to the wrong memory, or a quiet death. The experiments with the settings of the dosbox did not give anything. Again, maybe you are more lucky and this image is working, I just stopped all attempts to find the way that I want to talk about, it is millions of times easier.
Then I tried to squeeze out everything that is possible from the 98th Windows, it worked a little more stable, but again, 99% is unplayable or looks very not ice. I tried a lot of virtualoks.
Then came the new vmware release in which they boasted of their 3D support in the virtual machine. It seemed to me that they ignored all this, as I did ... almost.
Windows 98 again did not please anything - there is a virtual graphics adapter in it, the simplest games somehow work, but DirectX 5.0-9.0 stubbornly says that there is no video adapter, go for a walk.
And then I got a complete overview from vmware out of the corner of my eye - they did not promise support for normal 3D everywhere! Only starting with XP! And we don’t need more. For 99% of games there are compatibility files that will allow them to run under XP. And there you can put a dosbox to the heap so that everything is in one place. This solves all the problems with new computers! Plus, this system theoretically can live forever. If you do not install anything other than games, make backups of it (my backup XP SP3 + Need For Speed 1-5 in full versions weighs 1! DVD in the archive and 7.5GB in the working form of the vmware image - which is almost invisible to a multi-terabyte screw) - your happiness will always be with you.
Everything would be fine, but something was missing. In my computer room, as a child, there were a lot of computers, but for some reason, only one of them had a longer queue than new iPhones now ... there was a small print on the wall next to each computer what kind of hardware it had, that's all like everyone except one line - everyone had Riva TNT and Voodoo!
Who knows what I mean, he will appreciate.
Even if the game had a version of Direct3D along with Voodoo, they never even stood by.
Before, I didn’t really bother, played and played, but when I first saw HOW my favorite Need For Speed 3 and Counter-Strike 1.6 are different, like dozens of other games, I replenished the queue for this computer for a long time. It seemed like magic - all the other pictures looked prehistoric and scary against his background. You should have seen it all with my eyes.
One way or another, there was a place for Voodoo in this find of mine. No, I did not buy it, and it will not work now in a virtual machine without much effort.
Many thanks to the guys from www.zeus-software.com - they made it possible, quickly answer questions and quickly fix bugs, which are almost nonexistent.
When I did this, I almost cried. Orgasm with my eyes, I can’t call it another way, goosebumps run through my skin - as if I looked into my memories and everything remained exactly the same there.
Cats flying to the screen in NFS II, the coolest rain NFS 3, snow, fog, real shadows, I now have a picture from the distant past, anytime I want and no one can ruin it, even me.
Here you can see the gallery of screenshots taken on this virtual machine with this wrapper: cryforspeed.com/inspiration
And here is a detailed and step-by-step guide, although I think it’s not necessary, everything is so simple,
it’s just all sorts of little obvious things: cryforspeed.com/classic-need-for-speed
It has been several months since I did this. Not a couple of weeks pass so that I do not run this virtual machine. It loads faster than some applications on my iPhone, all games work perfectly, as if it were the 90-98th year and you are sitting at a computer with one of Voodoo. Pure, unclouded pleasure.
Thanks to everyone who read here, I want to hear your opinions, additions or corrections, maybe I missed something.
I also want to hear the answer to the question - do you play old games and how often?
If you just leafed through to the end in search of a solution or didn’t understand what to do, download the vmware player from their website (it’s free and can now create virtual machines by itself), install XP, install nGlide wrapper, install your games and, if necessary, install they have compatibility profiles for XP (for 90% of problem games, profiles for XP are on the Internet, plus many are on the nGlide manufacturers website), we play.
In the worst case, all actions take half an hour, which can not be compared with the time to make the same NFS 4 work on Win7 x64.
If this doesn’t help, it’s still something incomprehensible - according to the last link just above, there is a very long manual that has been chewed before each action.
UPDATE:Today I specially installed VirtualBox and XP, games go only in the weakest SoftwareMode,
VirtualBox itself only supports Direct3D experimentally. When installing 3dfx wrapper, not a single game works - a black screen with normally running music, only a reboot saves. It turns out my version is the only one working for games supporting 3dfx.
