Smartphone review OPPO Find 5: “non-poppy” flagship

I admit, until April of this year, I did not hear about the company OPPO. For the first time, learning about the location of the company (and its factory) in China, taking into account "obscurity", even made an incorrect conclusion about the image of the manufacturer. And then on April 24, a press conference was held in Moscow, at which I radically changed my mind about this brand of phones. As far as I can see, the Habrahabrovites have so far “disassembled” only the OPPO Finder X907 model (discontinued, will release an updated version). In general, I decided to correct the situation and talk about the OPPO Find 5 flagship that fell into my hands.

But first, still a little about OPPO. Not in vain at the Moscow “press” the OPPO Find 5 performance seemed to me a kind of supporting action. The first was a story about the company itself and the features of its work in Russia. In order not to bother anyone, I will focus on specific indicators: the staff of engineers - 1,400 people (40% - software), 6,000 people on assembly lines, $ 300 million for branding last year, last year's factory turnover - $ 1.8 billion. And 6% of the Chinese market smartphones at the beginning of 2013. Last year, the OPPO Finder X907 held the title of the thinnest (6.65 mm) smartphone in the world. This is a word about the technical level of the company. Now a couple of my photos from the April event, where due to the "club" atmosphere with dim lighting at that time I was not able to properly evaluate the screen and the OPPO Find 5 camera. And Wi-Fi in the bench area was more of a fiction. However, I was a little distracted.

    Box and equipment

I feel kind of embarrassed, but I will have to praise the OPPO Find 5 box. Non-standard "storage" with aki gates. Moreover, those same "gates" in the closed state are held on the magnet. Plus, OPPO mockingly mocked manufacturers who, including flagship smartphones, did not want to use metal. Here is a metal plate right on the box. Not a fact, of course, that stainless steel (as in the phone model itself).

The package bundle was not rich: a warranty book, a headset, a microUSB cable and a charging unit. Judging by the fact that the “guarantee” was entirely in Chinese, and the flat plug of the charger did not want to fit in the socket, I received a not-so-commercial version of the device. Nevertheless, regarding the services and technical support, the localization of the smartphone was obvious. NFC tags that are in the photo are not included in the Russian package.

    Appearance The

general features of the case remind us of the “previous generation” of the Sony Xperia, but the similarity is manifested by and large only in strict right angles and a slightly curved back cover. The smartphone is not trying to hit teenage “flashy” design delights, it looks solid and consistent with its level.

There are two color options: black or white (the front with a frame around the display remains black).

I liked the second option, as the white surface was much less brand. By the way, the plastic of the case is matte, if anyone is tired of the sliding glossy surfaces from Korea. In fairness, I will say that OPPO Find 5 also slides remarkably in the palm of your hand.

About the materials. The plastic, which occupies most of the case, looks strong and not at all flimsy. OPPO played on the requirement of users to use metal in flagship solutions. But not entirely predictable. Instead of a metal back cover, we got stainless steel on the front of the phone. Note to lovers of interesting facts: the plate is machined for 4 hours from a solid bar weighing 210 grams - to the final 6.3 grams.

There is no slot for a memory card, which is “sad” can be seen from several angles. You can browse that the system is already “eating” decently memory. In my 32 GB version, a total of 27.2 GB was available. Although I would not say that the model is “littered” with software chips like a “hodgepodge” of Samsung flagships. In addition, the Full HD screen has the storage of a video library of the appropriate resolution. To give a different view of the question, I will quote an interview with the head of OPPO Mobile Russia, Evgeny Zemskov, which was distributed in a printed video at a press conference: “OPPO conducted a study in China, Thailand, and the United States to find out how much users need memory card slots for smartphones. According to the results, it turned out that most consumers are completely satisfied with the amount of internal memory of their smartphone. [...] An example of the same iPhone confirms this once again. ” I do not justify OPPO, however, I am glad that such decisions are not made at random.

There are only two keys on the case - the power button on the left side and the dual volume control on the right. In the photo, it may seem that the “sunken” buttons are an illusion due to the use of transparent material. Plus - the buttons are located "under the fingers", which is not always found in 5-inch smartphones. Minus - the keys have a too low profile. It looks beautiful, but pressing is not too convenient. On top of the headset jack, below - microUSB, nothing surprising.

The design of the SIM card slot (more precisely, micro-SIM) has confused me. In order for the card holder to leave the slot, you need to insert a thin long object (for example, an unfolded paper clip) into the hole next to it. If suddenly on the road there is a need to change the SIM card, and there will be no pins at hand - I do not envy you. Before, I met a similar approach only in the Prestigio Ultimate 10.1 3G tablet, where a clip was included in the kit. Judging by the OPPO Find 5 review on the "trunk", a similar element is also included in the commercial version of the delivery.

Regarding the general usability, I can’t say anything bad. Weight of 165 grams and a thickness of 8.86 mm are normally combined against the background of the size of the phone. For fragile girls, the model seems a little heavy. In the hand, the smartphone does not cause any discomfort. In conclusion, a couple of “strokes” - on the front side there is an LED indicator, and the rear is decorated with a metal insert frame for the camera and flash.

    Screen

There’s nothing to complain about - a Full HD display, 5 inches, 441 PPI, Gorilla Glass 2 protection. You can bet on the topic of IPS (in OPPO Find 5) vs Super AMOLED, but in fact I wouldn’t do that in acquaintance with the model. Largely due to the lack of an air layer between the matrix and the sensor layer. Therefore, at first it seems like you are working in 3D glasses, the picture looks so “lively”. Of course, this is most noticeable in HD and Full HD clips / films. And, sometimes, in games - oddly enough, here I was particularly struck by the recently released Can Knockdown 3.

Of course, there is no escape from the IPS flaws, but they are expressed to a minimum extent - a “bluish” coating, as well as “colored” shades in the black areas (from the “angle” position) can only be seen in poor lighting conditions. In daylight, black looks deep enough. By the way, in the sun the display retains good readability.

    Camera

The rear 13 MP (the f / 2.2 aperture and CMOS format 1 / 3-06 inches were indicated on the presentation slide) and the front 2 MP - all in an adult way. In the shooting application, I was most struck by the lack of detailed settings. That is, removed ISO, exposure, etc. At first I did not believe it and clarified this point in the technical support of OPPO. In principle, the loss is small - I doubt that most users will generally notice a "flaw". Plus, the interface deprived of cluttering the questionable usefulness of options such as sharpness. All we have is a panel with four buttons: change the camera; flash control; tab with HDR option; and a set of "grid", geotags, recognition of smiles, camera sound, timer, resolution.

The camera instantly takes pictures, as the angle changes, autofocus constantly works. They did not begin to make a separate physical shooting button, instead, either of the two volume keys can act as a “shutter”. The quality of the photos is predictably high, I am attaching a couple of sample photos. Macro shooting can be carried out from a distance up to 5 cm, although it is not always possible to “catch” the focus from the first try.

    Performance

The asset of the smartphone Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 (1.5 GHz), Adreno 320 and 2 GB of RAM. This, if anything, is the normal level of the top-end smartphone in the first and second quarter of 2013. By the way, the Sony Xperia Z runs on the same processor and graphics accelerator bundle. Frankly, you don’t have to write anything particularly interesting about the speed / stability of the system itself - frank “crashes”, freezes or systematic micrologs were not noticed. Of course, nowhere without benchmarks - you yourself can clearly see the results in the screenshots.

As for the games, again I can’t make any special claims. Once again, using the example of Dead Trigger, I was convinced how much performance can vary. It seemed to you in the case of a mid-level smartphone that you play “fast” - and here with OPPO Find 5 you begin to recall that there is such a really powerful smartphone and a beautiful resource-demanding game with high FPS. In Real Racing 3 everything was a "bunch", without subsidence FPS there was a ride when viewed from the "back" with a highly detailed rendering of my car. At the beginning, when flying over the camera, “microscopic” moments of thought were still noticeable. Here is my ill-fated Ainol Novo 9, if I was waiting for the level to load, out of competition.

    System

Fortunately, there is much to talk about in this section. I have to say right away - I liked OPPO Find 5 in this aspect in that, unlike [I will not point a finger], the model is not overloaded with a “crowd” of innovations, “innovative” solutions and various features. I would even be indignant that much more could be done with the OPPO software engineer staff. But they will not. In my personal opinion, the model has a balance between the completion of the system and the congestion of the platform. In the latter case, one does not have to sigh about the impossibility of removing one or another useless “proprietary” feature. Just in case, I emphasize - this is my personal IMHO, which may just differ from the opinion of fans of global customization of Android “out of the box”.

In OPPO Find 5, Android 4.1.1 is installed, the release of Android 4.2 is officially planned. In the settings, the installation of a periodic check for updates is available. It should be assumed that with the help of the same tool, if necessary, OPPO provides “intermediate” updates.

Getting started with the lock screen. To access the desktop, we make a tangent gesture, as if spinning a “glass window” along the vertical axis.

In total, six desktops are offered. The bottom panel is customizable and can contain five shortcuts. Creating a folder by transferring one icon to another is also valid in the open list of applications. Actually, only two screens of the program list are explained by the use of folders - social networks, Yandex and Google services, as well as Utilities were grouped. Hi Sony Xperia Z.

As you can see, they did not overdo it with additional programs. Of the standard applications, many have undergone a redesign - a calendar, clock, gallery, etc. Most of all I remember a few points. The first is a feedback form. I launched the program, wrote about the problem, sent it, and received an answer. Simple and effective. In general, one could write a separate article about OPPO tech support. The utilities contain a “short” instruction, which is actually quite voluminous. The information collection is well designed and will not be superfluous for reading at leisure to any owner of this model.

A good impression was made by the file manager, with built-in FTP and DLNA functions.

But the greatest impression on me was, strangely enough, the settings. Here, the developers “came off”, giving out almost 50 total points in four tabs. Almost everything is subject to tuning, including the operation of the LED indicator. Perhaps, it was not so much the abundance of settings that pleased us, but their clarity and simplicity of “orientation”

    Sound

Finally, we got to one of the most remarkable features of the model - Dirac HD Audio. OPPO describes this as a technology with software and hardware processing of sound, usually used in hi-end audio and video systems: "[...] immerse yourself in the sound that the artist originally put into the composition." The above quote seemed a little strange to me, since most likely we are talking about the sound that the sound engineer is laying. That is, in fact, we are shown a monitor sound, which music lovers do not too much favor for “dryness”. If anything, Dirac is responsible for the audio systems at Bentley and Rolls-Roys. And in OPPO Find 5 :)

Be that as it may, for me the listening base was the rootless “gags” for 20 euros from Amsterdam, as well as the AKG K44 and AKG K272HD headphones. I can’t say that I was extremely delighted with what I heard, but the quality is really excellent. It should be understood that a smartphone still implies listening to high-quality recording with a high bitrate. Otherwise, get ready to listen to the flaws of the compressed files. Of course, the smartphone failed to “rock” the AKG K272HD, in other headphones the sound for “normal” audibility was set with the remaining volume margin of about 30% of the maximum.

The headset deserves special attention. I note that for some time now I have not unpacked bags with a headset - probably, the dominance in testing models of the middle price range affects. So, after listening to the complete “ears”, I willingly believe that they were developed by OPPO with the direct participation of Dirac. The sound is great, but one point confuses - where are the foam pads ?! It turns out that a person buys a smartphone for almost 20 thousand rubles - and forced to look for "nozzles"? However, I remember the impression of the headset more than the indicated OPPO omission.

The multimedia speaker did not fail - it “seems” loudly, does not choke. In fact - almost a mobile speaker is obtained. Of course, there is no bass as a class, but with the other frequencies of frank simplifications are not heard.

A music player deserves no less attention than a sound system. The playback menu is attractively ascetic, and we won’t dwell on it - we are interested in the settings.

Inquisitive music lovers will have to stay in the settings, building “their” sound - there are many options. In the “Headphone Mode” tab, I selected Dolby Mobile. In fact, with the Dirac effect, the sound for some reason became somewhat clamped, with a clear emphasis on high frequencies. The problem could be solved by the equalizer, but for some reason, when you turn on the Dirac effect, other settings are disabled.

“Surround sound” is a useful point. with it, the sound becomes a little livelier. Four settings (off, normal, medium or strong) are provided separately for high and low frequencies. The equalizer is crowned with presets by style (where is the rap artist? :)) plus a 7-band field for experienced users to experiment.

    Conclusion

In some paragraphs, I still did not highlight moments like supported wireless standards or battery life. In the first case, I can’t say anything special, and in the second - we are talking about one standard smartphone-bottom. Although abusing resource-intensive capabilities is not worth it. OPPO Find 5 is voracious, with exploitation “to the fullest” the user risks searching for a socket before evening.

In the minuses of the smartphone, I would write the battery and a strange connector for the SIM card, in the remaining moments I do not see any significant flaws (just fix it). Otherwise, in terms of its “tactical and technical” characteristics, OPPO Find 5 somehow does not look like a black sheep, if you try to put it on a par with the top-end Full HD smartphones Sony, HTC or, I'm not afraid, Samsung. The official price tag for the version with 16 GB of memory is 19 990 rubles, for 32 GB they are asking for 22 990 rubles. If you discard the "official", on average, the price tag of competitors starts at 25 thousand rubles. In my opinion, OPPO Find 5 is worth the money. Moreover, the model will be interesting to those who want to stand out among the owners of the flagships of "pop" producers.

Finally, I note that OPPO promises to present in Russia by the end of the year on a monthly basis according to one new model. As far as I can tell from the brand’s site, the OPPO Clover R815 is on the way. With a diagonal of 4.3 inches, this dvuhsimochnik is interesting with a 4-core processor (although who will surprise you with this?) And, more importantly, the presence of Dirac HD Audio. Judging by the interview, the minimum possible price tag for OPPO models in Russia will fluctuate around 10 thousand rubles. I won’t make any premature conclusions - we’ll see if the new product falls into my hands.
