Do not do as I do. Or about your future job

0. Introduction.

This post may well be both a continuation and an antipost to this post .
It is rather a brief note about my personal situation from which a useful lesson can be learned: do not do as I do.
These are my thoughts and actions, but I hope that they will help someone.

1. Preamble or introduction.

It happens that I'm tired.
It really got tired of working at one office and you want to change the profile orientation.
Or even not so profile, but still - change.
And you make a decision: start a personal HR-a, post and send out a resume, meet new people and potential employers.
And the point is zero.

At the moment, I work as a technical director in an Internet, telephony and television provider.
We have tremendous potential, but in view of the invalid marketing policy, we are slightly in the ass.
In connection with this, I have been looking for a new job for a very long time.
This is a brief tale about this.
You come for an interview for the position of technical director, and to you: “You know, you are from another industry. You do not suit us. ”
- What nonsense ?, - I think, - Telecoms! It's always on the cutting edge! On the one hand, the Internet with peer-to-peer wars, on the other hand, a capricious client.
But it was not there.
It actually happens in different ways.
You come to a company that deals with international telephony, and everyone is happy that you came!
And all your skills fit. Even more so - the company suits you.
But the president of the company says: "You are not so hot in development."
Excellent!
We read, learn, make new friends, and! .. And nothing.
You are no longer a programmer.
You enter agile in yourself. Moreover, you have already introduced ITSM a long time ago.
Those. in fact, you are a great manager.
Mile Stones, Achievements and more you use for work.
But it’s not rolling.
And it doesn’t roll precisely because you are a manager in your environment.
That’s how they explain the reason for the refusal.
But on the other hand, what ossification can be where sometimes you need
to build a web high-load, and where is a fail-safe core network?
It turns out that you need to clearly define not only your position, but also the position of who you want to become.

2. The bottom line.

For example, a company that is a payment system (a-la Qiwi).
Vacancy of the system administrator.
They don’t take you for two reasons:
- you are already a technical director.
- you are no longer a sys. admin.
I will explain why so.
As a manager, you don’t stoop to junior padovans. Your bastards do it for you.
As a sys.admin., You are not completely aware of whether there was an update for such a module Nagios / Zabbix / Cacti, which eliminates this or that jamb.
You know that this can be done like this. Or write such a crutch.
But you are not aware of updates.
You have been working with your “top managers” for a long time and just manage the processes.
And most importantly - you are already a manager.
Can you work under the direction of someone else?

For example, a startup company produces a mega-game and you are applying for a backend developer.
You do not suit us, not because you just solved our “main problem”, but because you want to grow in our company from a developer into * what you need to substitute *.

For example, sale.
A large, huge sale, which has long grown from itself and has a small Yandex inside.
Joke.
Or not a joke.
Because the whole farm processes the Internet for product counterparts.
Position: team leader of a group of administrators.
Disclaimer: you want to change too much. It’s enough for us that the farm can barely cope and we don’t think to increase capacity.

For example, traffic arbitrage.
Position: manager of everything and everyone.
Disclaimer: You are trying too hard to attract money to the company (here follows “Shieldooo ??”).
Example: Japan; Popular music tracks in Japan Russia; Popular resources users xsud.
Explanation: the office is engaged in arbitration of traffic for other offices; Segment: Japan-Russia.
We need a person who can optimize the work of several departments, thereby reducing costs and increasing margins (again, "Schiiito?").

3. Conclusions and more.

There are a lot of examples.
The conclusion is simple.
When you want to change your position, think seven times about how you will live later.

Thanks.
