Tired of gigantic smartphones? GSM Arena calls for the release of more smartphones of a reasonable size. Support the initiative

    According to a very curious April study by Flurry (top 200 smartphones), 69% of users prefer smartphones in the range 3.5 "- 4.9" . But today 5 "shovels come out one by one, which cannot fit in your pocket. And statistics show that there is no limit to the increase in the average size of smartphones .

    The screen size race began in 2010 (see Engadget 's excellent historical review “ The ever-expanding smartphone screen: how supersized became everyday " ), and now those who need a smartphone with a modern configuration have to choose between shovels from 5" to 7 ". It's not that it's hard to put in your pocket - it's hard to use with one hand, not to mention the increased fragility.

    GSM Arena site, if you select only 2 parameters: “Android phone” and “2 GB RAM”, offers 53 phones . However, if you filter them by the parameter “Screen size not more than 4.5”, then there will be only 5 models . What's even sadder is that the characteristics of devices with screens ranging from 4.3 to 4.6 are generally worse (for example: no LTE, or little memory, or a bad screen, no memory card or low screen resolution, Gorilla Glass protection, a weak processor, or - even worse - the lack of support for the 3G range of the UMTS 900).

    We can say that in 2013, manufacturers are guided by the rule: "Medium-sized smartphones - a mediocre filling."

    At GSM Arena, they decided to take the initiative into their own hands and urge the largest smartphone manufacturers to stop ignoring the needs of people who need smartphones of a reasonable size, and with a decent configuration .

    Many modern smartphones do not fit in your pocket :(

    The average screen size is growing annually:

    In 2013, the problem began to attract the attention of more and more people:

    If the trend continues, the phones will have to be worn like this:

    In the news “Join our call to release more compact and productive smartphones for Android”, GSM Arena offers to sign a petition, the results of which are promised to be discussed directly with device manufacturers. A worthy initiative!

    What today can be considered compact and modern?

    • Dimensions no more than Motorola RAZR i or Apple iPhone 5 , so that you can comfortably control with one hand and comfortably carry in your pocket;
    • 2GB of RAM;
    • Screen from 4.2 to 4.5 with reasonable resolution, like 720x1280;
    • Performance chipset Snapdragon 600, Exynos 5 Octa;
    • Quality camera;
    • High-quality screen;
    • The presence of protection Gorilla Glass;
    • High-quality speaker + sound in the headphones;
    • Multiband UMTS (Europe + America)
    • LTE support
    • Weight up to 130 g.

    And now try to buy such a smartphone ... You are waiting for disappointment and the struggle with compromises. Such characteristics can be found mainly in devices with a diagonal of 5 inches. That is the problem.

    And what about the "Chinese"?

    During this year, users hoped that many Chinese smartphones will come out on the attractive MTK6589 chipset, a distinctive feature of which is the ability to use 2 SIM cards at the same time, and not alternately. However, at the moment it’s very difficult to buy even a Chinese smartphone with 2Gb RAM:
    Many Chinese manufacturers of budget smartphones have long been morally ready to switch to the 2 GB RAM bar, but there is one problem - incompatibility with the MT6589 platform. For the vast majority of budget “Chinese” this platform is already the main and indispensable, so until now, companies such as JiaYu, iOcean and others only promise us devices with 2 GB of RAM, but in reality smartphones with only 1 GB of RAM go on sale.
    Another point to which you should pay close attention to china phones is support for 3G frequencies. Such a wonderful product as Xiaomi Mi-2S , for example, having top-end characteristics comparable to the Nexus 4 (excellent screen 4.3, Quad-core 1.7 GHz Krait 300, 2GB) does not support the UMTS 900 (which means that 3G will not work well in premises and in the area, which, theoretically, cuts off the majority of buyers).

    Manufacturers continue to increase screen sizes

    image
    In April, Samsung introduced two smartphones with a strikingly large display diagonal - Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 .

    And where are the offers for those who need regular sizes, from 4 to 4.5 inches?

    If you are one of those who think you need more compact smartphones, support the GSM Arena initiative!

    To: Android smartphone manufacturers

    Today we are witnessing how top-end smartphones grow in size literally before our eyes. We believe that you should not limit medium-sized devices to average performance. We urge you to review your line of mobile devices.

    We firmly believe that top-end smartphones should not turn into mini-tablets, or at least users should have the right to use the latest equipment and programs in more compact medium-sized cases.

    Manufacturers of Android smartphones should not forget that the key characteristic of any phone is mobility (portability). We, mobile phone users, urge you to start producing medium-sized phones with top-end features.

    Sincerely,
