Getting amateur radio category

  • Tutorial
The topic of amateur radio communication in the “for beginners” format has already been raised several times on Habré, but the procedure for obtaining a radio amateur category and call sign has not been considered in detail. It should be noted that this procedure is quite simple and, moreover, free, but there are some nuances of a purely bureaucratic-procedural nature, so the instruction can save someone some time.

I do not pretend to be a guru in this issue, moreover, it just so happened that recently I needed to get a call sign and register a simple portable transceiver. It will be difficult to say whether this will ever lead me to the ranks of amateur radio amateur athletes, so far I do not relate to them.

Interested, I ask for cat.

To begin with, about a year ago, the proficiency testing procedure was standardized, which somewhat simplifies preparation.

Further on the points.

1. Necessary information. The first thing you need to do is, in fact, take the exam questions and programs for self-testing on the website of the СРР (Union of Russian Radio Amateurs) . 2. Preparation. It is best to prepare for category 3. The questions are almost the same as on 4, so why not. You can officially take the externally at 2, even at 1, but in most radio clubs you will be sent very far with this idea. For there is nothing. If you really need to - look at them again in a month.

According to the preparation methodology - here is what anyone likes. Having some initial knowledge base and good memory, I just read the questions with the answers and was ready to give up. Some of my friends simply hollowed out the programs until they began to get a stable result, since at the end of the exam you’ll get statistics on which you can figure out your mistakes. If in electronics and radio communications you are a complete zero - it would not be superfluous to read something clever like this . In general, the tests are simple and pass, if desired, as rights - that's all.

3. Verification. First you need to find a local radio club. As a rule, it is located in the DOSAAF building, if any. In Kazan, where I personally gave up, they even have a websitewith all the necessary information. The exam is usually held once a month. It is better to drop by or at least call the club in advance and find out what you need to have with you, whether you need to show up in advance and if there are any special fees or rules in your local club. Say, with us the whole procedure is free, and you only need to have a completed application in a standard form with you. I have not even been asked for an identity document.
And yes! People are different everywhere, but be prepared for a stream of stupid questions of the class “Man, why do you need it?” And “Does the equipment have / what / why / where / how much / and if I find it?” Everything is clear here. Radio amateurs today are their own rather closed and few hangouts, which you, like, are going to enter. Consider such questions as a kind of adequacy check or face control. Personally, I almost frightened her with a fright.

4. The call sign. If everything went well, then you get the document with the harsh name "Extract from the minutes of the meeting of the commission to verify the compliance of operational and technical readiness with the minimum requirements for amateur radio operators”. Just like that. My looks like this

, but in fact it can be slightly different from club to club.
You also need to fill out a standard form application . Everything is simple here, the main thing is not to get confused with the translation of the name and surname into the Latin alphabet and indicate the correct line in the "Note" section. There are recommendations for filling out.
The resulting two documents must be scanned and sent to grfc@grfc.ru. It is possible to send by post in paper, but this option is not recommended by experienced people.

5. We are waiting. Actually, at this stage I am still. We are waiting for about two weeks for the decision of the State Reserves Center on your documents and something about “forever” until our beloved “Russian Post” has already brought a HAREC certificate with your call sign and assigned category.

6. Registration of equipment. If any, all of your radio stations, transceivers, and other receivers must be registered at the local ILV branch in person. You can find the address on the official website . For Kazan, information is here . For some other regions, replacing the number at the beginning of the link to the number of your region may work.
Please note that if you do not live in a private house, then you will have to discuss the installation of the HF antenna separately with local residents.

As I progress through the path of amateur radio, my post may be supplemented, or may develop into a small series.
I will be glad to see advice from more experienced people.
